Vitamin D Supplement

I was very surprised to hear my pedi recommend a vitamin d supplement for my little guy because we are breastfeeding. I always thought mothers milk was perfect and all babies ever needed. Did any of you give this to your babies? Thoughts?

Re: Vitamin D Supplement

  • Some people give it, some people don't.

I felt comfortable giving the Vitamin D (not the multi-vitamin; just colorless, flavorless D), so we do but if I miss days I don't worry about it. We are very fair skinned and don't get a ton of sun, so I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Other people take the approach that people have been breastfeeding for a bajillion years without supplementing with D and they have been fine.

I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer, especially if you and baby get sun.

We do. Her pedi said if I get into my LO at least a couple times a week we'd be doing good since most people forget to give them. After the first month, I realized my baby girl actually likes the drops so she gets them every night now.

  • I do because I burn easily so I tend to avoid going out in the sun -- and I tend to be freezing in the summer with the air conditioning on so I am usually wearing long sleeves and jeans/pants so not much of my body is exposed to the sun when I am out.  But I often don't think about it so he usually only gets it a couple times per week.

A couple months ago when ds was on a mix of bm and formula, I only gave it on the days that he got more than 2/3 of his ounces from bm since I figured the formula had enough for the days that he got mostly formula.

I was really good about giving the vitamin d to my first.  But my second DD hasn't gotten it consistently.  A nurse told me that she never gave her kids the drops, she only nursed.  That made me feel better.

  • we didn't give them - our pedi told us that between BFing and a small amount of sun exposure each day she will be fine.  She said she had only seen one case of rickets in her entire career, and the baby was severely malnourished so it was an extreme case anyway.
