Not licensed daycare, drop side crib help

In my small community there are licensed day cares and unlicensed day cares. I know one lady who is running an unlicensed daycare, she seems on top of it, but today she bought a drop side crib off our 'swap site'. I know I am assuming a lot but is there anything I can do? I am not meaning this maliciously, we have a great licensed provider we love and this woman running the daycare is a nice enough lady,  but would this be reportable? It does not involve me at all and I'll admit that, so I guess my question is, what would you do?

Re: Not licensed daycare, drop side crib help

  • You don't know she is using it for her daycare...

Leave it alone. I work for CPS and we would not do anything regarding this.

Thats what I was wondering, I honestly had no clue what CPS or any governing agency would do. It would be kind of hard to prove she was running a day care.

Well, on the post she said "perfect for my kiddos" and since her youngest is 6, I assumed it was for daycare, but it might be for something else. I saw a cute craft with a crib I want to do when DD is out of hers.

  • Yeah this would be completely screened out if a call was placed.

  • I only care because of the guilt I would feel if I knew a kid was in a drop side crib and he got hurt and I could have prevented it, kwim? My kids are in licensed one, so the state checks them out because its illegal to have a drop side crib in a daycare in my state. If the center was unlicensed they wouldn't be checked by the state.

But, as I said in my OP, I would not want to be malicious with this lady, she seems nice enough. My husband taught one of her boys.

  • I agree. It's not my place. I just get frustrated when it comes to kids' safety and people disregarding rules. But, I am just assuming she would use it for daycare, and you know what happens when you assume :)

It's the parents choice to check out where their child is sleeping. You watch out for your child, and they will watch out for their own.  Unless I saw a child in immediate danger, I wouldn't say a word.  You don't know the whole story.

I'm honestly not being snarky despite our recent interactions when I ask this but why exactly do you care? You say "we have a great licensed provider we love and this woman running the daycare is a nice enough lady" so is your child at this daycare where the drop side crib will be? You do say that it doesn't involve you at all so why would you even consider reporting this person?

You ask what I would do? Absolutely nothing.

She cares because someone's child could be at risk.  I'm not saying there's much of anything she can do but is it our reality that people are only supposed to care about their own children and to hell with everyone else?  OP - if there's a way to reach the provider you may want to reach out to her and let her know that it's illegal to sell or even donate drop side cribs.  Chances are she's aware they're illegal now (it actually scares me if she doesn't know) but in case she doesn't, you may be helping her and it's really all you can do.

She knows its illegal because another poster told her, and the Mod of the group got involved. I know there isn't much I can do, I just get worried about kids and their safety, especially at daycare.

Isn't there a way to make a drop side crib safe by anchoring the side up or something? Maybe she was planning to do that.

Hmmm, I had never heard of that. That could be true.

  • Definitely think it's not your position to police a daycare you don't even attend. It's each parents job to make sure that they're leaving their child in a safe environment, which it sounds like you've done for your own child. This is one of the reasons that I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my daughter at an unlicensed daycare.

This. We have a drop side crib that a friend gave us. The manufacturer sent out a kit to make the drop side immobile/anchored that we used, so it is completely safe. The "drop side" no longer drops.

After 2 years of TTC, our daughter was born on Oct 31, 2011!
