low-lying placenta

I had my A/S four weeks ago, at which point the doctor just looked at the report briefly and said "everything looked fine". I was back there again today so I snuck a peek at the report in my file, and saw that it said I have a low-lying placenta. From what I can see online, this generally should move up and shouldn't be a problem, but most sources say the doctor should schedule another ultrasound for later on to check if the placenta has indeed moved. He hasn't said anything about scheduling another ultrasound at all, so I'm wondering if I should ask about this or just let it be. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!

I have a low lying placenta and have a follow up u/s scheduled for 28 weeks.  My OB wanted to give it enough time to move up.  In the mean time she put me on pelvic rest.  I would bring it up with your doctor.  Mine might be over cautious, but I would rather be safe.

This. I'd ask about it at your next appt. If you are not comfortable with them, you could get a second opinion too.

  • I agree with PPs. Although if you're nervouse about asking because you peeked in the file, then just ask about your placenta. I do.

  • That's exactly it... didn't want the doctor to know that I had peeked! ha. I will definitely ask next time. Although I have another appointment in 2 weeks with my regular family doctor (not the OB) so I might ask him as well, and if he's concerned he can send me for another ultrasound. Thanks all.

  • I also have a low lying placenta and was put on pelvic rest and have a follow up ultrasound. Go ahead and bring it up to your doctor! You could also just say matter of factly what should I be doing about my low placenta? Should I schedule another ultrasound? I doubt there would be a question of how you found out.

I will say that maybe the doctor didn't mention anything because it is borderline low lying. I think to be considered low lying it has to be 2.1 cm or less from your cervix and maybe yours is 2cm or something. That being said, I still think it should have been mentioned to you. Good luck!
  • I have one as well.  Mine is not actually over the cervix, but near it.  When I said to my ob that in my reading it seemed like 90 percent of these resolve, he said it is more like 99 percent.  He said that they are so likely to resolve that some experts say you don't need a follow-up scan, although he will get one on me at 32 weeks just to be sure.  But the uterus basically blows up like a balloon during pregnancy, so as it stretches upward, the placenta tends to move with it.  He said that medical guidelines to not suggest any restrictions, so I have come off pelvic rest (I was on it earlier in pregnancy for another complication) and am going to the gym regularly now as well.

The recommendations may be completely different for women for whom the placenta actually overlies the cervix to some degree.

Hi - I'm not able to post very often, but wanted to respond since I have a low-lying placenta, too (I'm due with baby girl #3 on Nov 23).  Mine is so borderline, that the Dr. at the hospital didn't even come speak with me - she just had the tech tell me I don't need to take any precautions since they think it will move.  They did schedule another u/s at 28 weeks just to check.  I have a close family member who is an MFM (high risk obstetrics) and she confirmed that in most cases, they do move and said I shouldn't worry about it now.  It's possible that you are also very borderline, so they didn't feel the need for any precautions?  Might as well ask your Dr. about your placenta though (like a pp said, maybe say you have a friend who mentioned she had a low lying placenta... how was mine?)  They may also end up scheduling a growth ultrasound for you later on, anyway.  Good luck!

  • You can have low lying placenta with no issues. If there was need for concern he/she would have told you. Probably wanted to save you undue stress.
  • I'd just ask - it would make you feel better. I also have a low lying placenta, but was told I didn't have to go back on pelvic rest as it would probably move. I already have regular ultrasounds with an MFM, though, so they would have followed up on mine anyway.

  • I was diagnosed with placenta previa. A low lying placenta. The ultrasound tech said I was high risk. Not sure what that means but it sure scared me!
  • I was diagnosed with low lying placenta at 12 weeks and my doctor made no mention of it either; I saw it in my file/ultrasound results that are posted online through the patient portal. I did ask the doctor and he said no restrictions and that it would likely move up on its own.  At my 20 week scan the tech said it had moved and I wouldn't have to worry about it going low again. I confirmed this with my doctor. But to be safe as PPs have said, I'd ask to make sure you don't have any restrictions.  Best wishes!
