Helmet

I just found out that BOTH of my twin boys (5 months) need helmets :o(  Does anyone have experience with helmets that they could share? Do the helmets hinder their development at all? I'm worried about them not hitting milestones because they're lugging around a big helmet. Were your babies bothered by them? Any tips or tricks you can share about making them comfortable. How long did your baby have to wear it? Obviously it's not an ideal situation but I know it's temporary and will definitely help them in the long run. Thanks!

Re: Helmet

  • What is the reasoning for the helmet? Were your twins preemies?

My boys were born at 29w4d and both had torticollis. We began PT at 2m, as soon as they were discharged from the NICU. My B baby's tort resolved but A's was tricky and caused plagiocephaly. At 6m adjusted, nearly 9m actual, he got a DOC band helmet. He wore it until just after their first birthday. It didn't bother him at all or delay his development, in fact he's way ahead of his brother on most physical milestones and is advanced physically for their actual age.

  • Both of mine had them also. They were put on around 7 months and they lasted about 3 months (were taken off prematurely for other reasons too long to get into). They barely even knew they were there, they slept fine, played fine, ate fine etc. It definitely is harder on us than it is on them. Feel free to message me if you have any specific questions but it really wasn't a big deal at all for us. I struggled with them having to wear them for a while but it was very easy. Good luck!

  • Both of mine are getting them as well.  They are starting with twin B since he is on the charts for size and head circumference and twin A will most likely start in a few weeks.

The doctors said that the helmets can really only achieve 20mm of change without moving to another helmet (having to buy a second one) and that the helmet usually only lasts about 3 months.

We go in on Monday to pick up Twin B's helmet.

Both my girls needed helmets. They got them around six months and had them for about eight weeks.

It seemed uncomfortable at first but they got uses to it. Once I was able to take them and put them on fast, it helped.

My girls sweated a lot while wearing the helmets and we just made sure they were dressed lightly.

  • oh my goodness, your boys are SO cute!
