Natural Birth

Ques. About delivering placenta

After reading the post farther down about birth plans I noticed a few people specifically request the placenta be allowed to deliver on its own. Can anyone explain this in more detail to me. I have had two children already and I just assumed it came on its own, I guess I never paid any attention.

Re: Ques. About delivering placenta

  • Some doctors use a bit of "traction" on the cord and help pull it out.

  • Some OBs like to give the umbilical cord a little tug to get it to come out faster. This can result in fragments of the placenta being torn and left inside the uterus, which can cause complications

  • Is the main concern of this practice having the placenta not come out completely?

Thanks I was typing at the same time as you.
  • Third stage labor (delivering the placenta) is more commonly treated with active management, even after a natural delivery, it just depends on the philosophy of your care provider so I would definitely talk to him or her about it at your next appointment.

There are differing schools of thought. My midwife, for example, will massage the belly after delivery but wait to give drugs until proven necessary. She also does not believe in cord traction. Others like to give drugs, sometimes pitocin, right away to minimize the risk of hemorrhage.  Some hospitals have a 30 minute policy when it comes to placenta delivery, but I've also read birth stories where mom waited hours to deliver the placenta and was fine.
