Known Donor and IUI?

Hello,

I am new to this particular board, so I apologize if this question has been covered (I imagine it has, but couldn't find it in recent posts) or is a stupid question.  I was more active on the bump when we were expecting, before this board was created.

My partner and I conceived our first child at home through a known donor.  We hope to use the same known donor for our second child, but for a variety of reasons may or may not be able to do so in the same way.  I want to educate myself about any options, if they exist.

Are there medical clinics that perform  IUI with a known donor?  (Specifically, a known donor and not a future father--husband/boyfriend/male partner).

Our OBGYN said that their health system would not do IUI with a known donor, and I wondered if that is across the board or if others have experience with this.

Thanks!

Re: Known Donor and IUI?

  • My fertility clinic is willing to work with a known sperm donor.  (IVF; I assume IUI also.)  I believe FDA regs make you freeze and bank the sperm for 6 months, though, so the donor can do repeat testing for HIV.  So maybe that's the impediment?  I think you should be able to find someone to work with you, but an RE (as opposed to an OB) will be far more conversant in the options.  Good luck.

This. I determine this was how many states do it. I'm assuming you are required to do it in all states, though. It seems to be expensive because you pay for the sample production, pre testing and then have to pay for more testing if the sperm goes unused or the donation is more than like a week apart. It becomes expensive, but I don't know any part of ttc with donor sperm that isn't!
