XP: Moms who had IUGR

Hello ladies.  I'm looking for other moms who had experience with IUGR.

DS's growth scans and my fundal height measurements were normal until week 32.  Things went quickly downhill from there.  He was estimated as 4lbs1oz at  35 weeks and 4lbs 4oz at 37 weeks when I delivered based on my doctor's recommendation.  DS actually only weighed 3lbs 7.8oz at birth.  Thankfully, he didn't have any respiratory problems or issues with sugar, temp, or jaundice.  He was perfect, just small.

I had weekly NSTs from 32 weeks to delivery and biweekly biophysical profiles from 35 weeks to delivery. All of these tests always came back normal. After delivery, my OB had my placenta sent to pathology to be tested.  That came back normal as well.

Were you ever given a reason for your IUGR?  What are the chances of it happening again?  My OB wants to do additional testing on me three months post partum.  Did any of you have this done?  I think it's bloodwork to see if I'm a carrier for something.

TIA!

I had IUGR with my daughter, but we know it was from my placenta shutting down due to the severe pre-e so I never went through additional testing or blood work.  I'm not sure what the odds are of it happening again, but I'd recommend talking further with your OB while you're going through testing to find out.  Hopefully you can get some answers about the cause.

This exactly.  We knew the cause of IUGR.

  • I had IUGR with my twins, which was the most likely cause of my IUGR. I also have a slightly misshapen uterus, I probably worked too much, and I had absolutely no appetite until midway through the second trimester. I'm a family doc, and stopped reading about IUGR when I was put on bedrest. It's too disconcerting while pregnant. Having previous IUGR is a risk factor, but not completely. There is some evidence that prenatal yoga can decrease risk for IUGR as well as the severity of IUGR. Best of luck. Never that fun to see a doc that often.
  • Thanks, ladies.  Everyone that I have found who had IUGR always had a cause suggested to them, but I still have nothing.  I hope the testing shows something so we know how to proceed.  Thanks again!
