Prenatal Vitamins?

Sorry for all the questions lol but I told you I have no idea what I'm doing. Like I posted earlier, my first dr appt is next Wednesday. My question is should I start taking prenatal vitamins right away?

Also, are they any you recommend? I need either chewable or liquid because I don't do good with swallowing pills.

TIA!.... again! :)

Re: Prenatal Vitamins?

  • definitely start taking them! they recommend you start taking prenatal vitamins 3-6 months before you actually get pregnant. i got softgels and for some reason they made me more nauseous, so if your stomach is sensitive, you might do a plain ol' tablet, but otherwise you could do the fancy softgels or chewables if they make those! GL!

Yep. Many sources I've seen say any woman of child bearing age should take them regularly, but basically, if you're TTC, they're a good idea (you want that folic acid very early on).

I'm not familiar with any liquid or chewable, but hopefully someone else does!

Start taking them now. I take the Nature Made Prenatal. They go on sale at Costco next week!

  • Target has a box store brand with two bottles in it one multivitamin and one DHA supplement. They're a little on the large side IMO, but they have all the right stuff in them!

  • Most prenatal vitamins don't contain enough folic acid. you should be taking 5mg. So you will need to supplement from your prenatal vitamin.

  • Yes take them right away and I found a gummy kind. Best part is they don't make me sick! I have always gotten super sick on prenatal vitamins... Good luck finding a good one!

  • Yes take them right away! I've been taking mine since January when I had my preconception visit and my doctor prescribed them to me. Right now I just use the prescribed ones because I don't have to pay for them and they have iron as well as folic acid.

My understanding is this is not applicable to all people. The CDC recommends 400 mcg. My OB recommends 800 mcg to 1 mg for normal pregnant women [the amount in most prenatals].

For those of us with MTHFR who can't process folic acid as well, she recommends folate, but some doctors recommend 3 to 5 mg of folic acid to ensure enough is processed if you have MTHFR. Otherwise, stick to the regular dosage.

  • Thank you to everyone who commented. I will be buying them today.
  • Yes, and I always take mine at night before bed to help curb the nausea that might accompany it.

Completely agree! My OB had the same recommendation.

  • I am taking Spring Valley Adult Gummy Prenatal multivitamin with DHA and Folic Acid.. they have no yeast, wheat, milk, eggs, artificial flavors colors and no added preservatives. I take 2 a day.. they are delicious!! I swear they taste just like gummy candies. I honestly could eat the whole bottle if it weren't a vitamin. Plus if I get a sweet tooth before bed I just eat my 2 vitamins for the day then and it satisfies the urge to eat junk food. I love them.

I found them at Walmart... I think they were around $10 a bottle.. it comes with 90 gummies. So, a 45 day supply.

With my last pregnancy I tried taking a jumbo prenatal pill and couldn't keep it down. I highly recommend them.

  • For everyone taking the Spring Valley Prenatal gummy... how do you guys take it?  The bottle doesn't specify, but my husband and I took it as 2 different ways.   I took it as take 1 vitamins twice a day.  He took it as take 2 vitamins once.

I agree though, it does taste like candy! LOL  I was so worried because I'd never taken a gummy vitamin before and was scared it'd taste awful.

    Thanks all!
