diaper changing in a 2 story house

Just wondering what everyone does if you live in  a 2 story house reguarding diaper changing.  Did you always go upstairs to your LO's bedroom with the changing area even when you were downstairs?  Or did you set up some sort of changing station downstairs for when you were down there?  If you have a seperate changing area downstairs what did you use?  Thanks.

Re: diaper changing in a 2 story house

  • I'm curious for answers! I was going to set up a PNP with changer for downstairs, but now I see people saying the changer isn't good for very long.

  • I have a PNP with a changer on the first floor so I don't always have to go upstairs. An extra changing pad or a blanket to put on the couch can work just as well if you don't plan on using a PNP. It's a lifesaver the first few months with all the diaper changes!

I use the top of my washer and dryer as a changing area on the first floor.  In fact I got so used to it, I keep all their clothes in there too even though their closets are huge.

With DD I had a PNP with changing station set up downstairs, but I never used it!  It felt good to get a bit of extra exercise and walk up and down the stairs during the day.  Especially when you are cooped up all day.  It really wasn't that inconvenient at all, and I have a fairly large home.

My plan is to do the same this time around.

  • We always change upstairs.  I have never changed a diaper anywhere other than in the nursery and it hasn't really bothered me having to go upstairs to make the change.  Think about it this way:  It's good exercise to help you get back in shape! :)

  • Now that DD is moving all the time, I don't think that it is safe to change here anyplace other than the floor. Now we use a travel pad, we keep everything in an ottoman cube in our livingroom.

We have a three story towhouse so we have the PNP set up in our bedroom. The changer that is attached is good till 25 pounds. I also bought a separate contoured changing pad that I think I will put in our living room and use it on the floor when I don't want to necessarily go upstairs to change her and just put the pad away when I am not using it. That is my plan for right now, it might change after she gets here. :)

Just so you know, even though the changing station states it's good for up to 25 lbs, there is NO WAY you can use it for that long.

My son is 8 months now, and we used the PnP changing station for the first 3 months, BUT, the changer is not well supported and tilts with weight.  In fact, it started sloping when DS was about 10 lbs or so.  my husband ended up adding a piece of wood underneath the changer for support, so that DS won't slope down while we're changing him.  With that, we were able to use the changer until DS was about 3 months.

Most babies don't get to 25lbs until they are a year old... BUT they are rolling over way before then, and it is simply NOT SAFE to change a baby in the PnP changing station when they start rolling over, IMHO.

To the OP - we have 3 floors in our condo.  When DS was a newborn, we have a changing pad in our bedroom (3rd floor) as DS was room-sharing with us.  We set up the PnP (w/newborn napper + changing station) in the living room (1st floor) .  We used the PnP changing station until he was 3 months, then put it away.  We started putting DS in his crib for naps by then; b/c the living room was getting to be too noisy for him to nap in.

His nursery is on the 2nd floor.  So after we moved him to his crib, we moved his changing pad to the 2nd floor.  Now we change him in his room 100% of the time.

  • We keep a munchkin diaper organizer caddy with extra diapers, wipes and a fabric waterproof pad for quick changes when we are downstairs in our main living area.  We change on the floor, couch, wherever is handy.

  • Every PNP is different so if you're considering one downstairs, see what kind of support there is for the changer. I have a PNP downstairs for now and the changer is very sturdy. I've put some weighted objects to test it out and it's fine. Mine goes to 30 lbs, but I'm planning to only use it for the first couple of months then put it away for baby #2. I'll just use the couch of my giant ottoman to change the baby after I'm done with the changer.

  • I don't use changing stations. We have diapers and wipes in several spots. I use the couch or a bed to change the kids. I will lay out a cloth diaper or a receiving blanket, then the new diaper. I lay the baby on the new diaper, undo do the old diaper, fold down, clean baby, move old diaper, wipe again if needed, and then do up new diaper and go from there.
  • I just have a small fabric cube that I keep downstairs. It has a mat, diapers, wipes, and diaper rash ointment. I just change her on the floor or sofa when she is downstairs.

I have a diaper caddy on the first floor and change DS on the bed, floor or couch.  Upstairs we use the changing pad in his room, which is now on the floor because he's all over the place.

  • We either change upsairs in DS's room or in the basement.  We have an ottoman in the basement that's big enough for DS (or use the floor).  We have a basket in our tv stand that has all the necessities including a fold out change mat, diapers, wipes, creams, and a small toy to occupy him.

my sister uses her pack n play.

  • You will not want to run and up stairs to change diapers. We had a changing pad and a small box with wipes and diapers downstairs.

  • 2-floor townhouse. Changing table, etc. upstairs. Downstairs we had a JJ Cold Diaper caddy that had a pad with it and diapers, lotions, etc. in it. We'd change him on the floor downstairs OR when the PNP was set up with the full-sized bassinet, we'd change him in that.

  • We go upstairs.  I know it sounds like heII when PG but it's really not that bad.  Not to mention, I prefer to keep diapers contained to the diaper pail.

not all PNP changers are this unsteady. Mine is just fine with my 17 lb LO. We also would never leave him unattended on the changer and he has never tried to roll while on it.

  • My house is one floor, but over 3600sq ft, so I have a changing station in the nursery and one in my room. I bought a diaper genie for each station and just keep both fully stocked.

With DD, we just went upstairs and it wasn't a big deal.  Now with DS, we bought a cheap changing table off Craigslist and I painted it and now we have that in our main living area for diaper changes.  It would have been nice to have that with DD too I think.

  • I had the changing table upstairs in his room and then I had a Pack n Play "center" thing with the changing table an all that on it. SO, I essentially had a changing table upstairs and downstairs. Worked out GREAT!

NEVER EVER had an issue with stability.  It was very sturdy.

  • We kept supplies on both floors. It ended up being required for me because dr orders was to not do stairs and our nursery was upstairs.
