Re: Adoption/Fostering Check-In - July 8, 2013

  • 1. What kind of fostering/adoption process are you working towards? What age(s) is/are the kiddo?

    DIA

    2. What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? (Remember it doesn?t have to be adoption related!)

Adoption related... we were blessed by family members and found out this weekend that we will not have to worry about figuring out how to fund our adoption! We are waiting to see if our formal application will be approved now..

    3. Where in the process are you at?

Waiting for the formal application to be processed and approved

    4. How are you feeling this week?

Starting out my week quite cranky. Our agency is processing our application and typically I would be excited, but I got an email from the LISW questioning both my husband and I's involvement in our churches. When we discussed with the director how we had both joined new churches in the last 6 months (we recently purchased our home and moved to the area) she told us to put our Pastoral reference as the pastor who married us - someone we are still great friends with. Now today we found out that because we listed him we have to account our involvement in the church, and answer a ton of questions about why we would choose him. If I had known this, I would have just put one of the pastors from our church down and gone with it... Arg!

I do not think it helps that I stupidly stayed out in the sun far too long yesterday and now am suffering from a horrible sun burn on my shoulders and legs. It's been fun trying to walk!

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?)

Wait to hear back from the agency about our application. Pay the next lump sum and then start the homestudy process!!!!

    6. What have you done for yourself this week?

We spent a lot of time with family this past week. It was glorious! I am thankful for the 4th of July in America and the holiday weekend that it automatically produces!

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn?t have to be adoption/fostering related!

I love the book "In On It" I just finished reading it this week and it was a great resource! I bought a book for my mom and mother in law!

  • I'm still very new here but jumping in with both feet.

    1. Domestic infant-toddler adoption.

2.Just read "Adopt without Debt" and getting ideas to afford adoption.

3.Very beginning. We are going to adopt in 2015. We are planning a consultation with our lawyer in the fall and making a money plan.

    4. I feel optimistic! Very open to the adventure and gearing up for reality. Emotions are in check. DH and I are communicating great together.

    5. We are saving up for the consultation, payingoff debt, starting an adoption savings and telling family about our plans to adopt.

    6. I'm having a night out with a friend this week who I rarely get to see. We're meeting for coffee and to talk about our kids.

    7. QQTW: I've been reading Ayn Rand's "The Art of Fiction". Fantastic book for people who write. It's a cure all for writers block.

    1. What kind of fostering/adoption process are you working towards? What age(s) is/are the kiddo? DIA

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? We bought a crib yesterday. We just refinanced on our home to lower our rate and pay off my student loans from my Masters- which is HUGE!!!

3.Where in the process are you at? We're patiently waiting (NOT) for a match.

    4. How are you feeling this week? Anxious

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?) To hopefully be matched with an EM and get to know her so that we can move towards a successful match.

6.What have you done for yourself this week? We bought a crib- it was as much for our child as it was for me. It was a big step as it actually means it's happening and I'm not afraid to buy baby related items.

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related! Favorite book- not sure. I enjoyed The Happiest Baby on the Block but I did not like Baby Proofing your Marriage (the theme is to keep having sex with your husband- that's basically the whole book). I just ordered 15 minutes outside each day and I'm excited about that. I want to instill a love for the outdoors in our children that I myself don't have. I don't want to raise couch potatoes.

  • 1. What kind of fostering/adoption process are you working towards? What age(s) is/are the kiddo?
    IA from Uganda, ages 0-3

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? (Remember it doesn't have to be adoption related!)
Honestly...someone was really nasty to me in an email (one thing I dislike about the internet is that people feel like they can say things to you that they wouldn't normally say to your face).  One of my big accomplishments last week was responding in grace to that person! Smile

3.Where in the process are you at?
One of our USCIS paperwork was returned to us because they needed more info (LOL), so I quickly sent it back in--hoping it doesn't delay us further, but recognizing that it's all in God's timing.

    4. How are you feeling this week?
    Victorious--God is in control!

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?)
We are preparing to start decorating our child's room in the fall--ordering furniture, painting, etc.

6.What have you done for yourself this week?
Last week my husband and I went on a date and then spent a wonderful 4th of July with dear friends and family.  It was much needed--I love how this group of people loves to laugh and have fun!  This week is CRAZY, but I'm kind of in the mood to watch "The Help."  I was invited to a 1950's Garden Party-themed bridal shower and need some inspiration for my clothes/hair!

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related!
My husband and I are currently reading "The Connected Child" by Karyn Purvis and it is an outstanding read!  It has great ideas on how to love your child where they are and how to unite a family.

I am currently reading a fiction book "The Whisper on the Wind" by Maureen Lang--about the underground newspaper in German-occupied Belgium in 1916.  It's really good--about a time period/place that I didn't know too much about.

I'm a dance studio owner, writer, cat mommy, and adventuress who is married to the man of her dreams. My husband and I have had a long-time dream to adopt and it's happening in a way that we didn't quite anticipate. But, like any move of God, it's turning out way better than we expected. We'd love for you to follow our story at www.kirstenkline.com!

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? (Remember it doesn't have to be adoption related!)

    I swam a 1/2 mile last week!

3.Where in the process are you at? Our emom is at 37weeks and 2 days pregnant. So---waiting.

    4. How are you feeling this week?  Nervous and excited.

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?)  Waiting for baby to arrive--- so---cleaning, a lot, cooking, spending time together as a couple.

6.What have you done for yourself this week? It's only Monday! Nothing!

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related!

I just read Gone Girl. Really surprising and twisty!

    3. Where in the process are you at?

We found out this week that our agency holds the file in-country until a potential match is found by their in-country staff, and then they register with the MoE. The paperwork expires 3 month after registration so they do it this way to save hassle.

    This means . . . . We're waiting for a match now!

    4. How are you feeling this week?

I am still feeling very very anxious. I can't help it - I'm on edge.

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?)

Pass the time . . . let's see . . . compulsively check my email and phone q10 minutes in case I miss something. I'm going nuts!

congrats!!! I'm very excited for you. I can only imagine how nerve wracking it is waiting on that call or email. I hope it comes soon.

Hope your back feels better soon!!!

  • 1. What kind of fostering/adoption process are you working towards? What age(s) is/are the kiddo?
    Toddler adoption from China

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share?

Sent in our second packet of documentation... all that's left is the medical evaluation! (...which we already passed last year when we were DIA, so I'm not concerned in the slightest.)

NAR - DD is half-way potty-trained! (We're still working on the #2, if you know what I mean.)

3.Where in the process are you?
Preparing to begin our home study (hopefully by the end of July, we'll have our first meeting scheduled.)

    4. How are you feeling this week?
Anxious to get things moving! We had no financial contributions in June, so I was settling into the idea that I'm going to have to get even more creative with my fundraising and saving... and then we got two checks totaling $375 this week! I don't expect that to happen often, but it was a nice little encouragement in this crazy process!

    5. What?s the next step in your journey?
Home study, then applying for as many grants as we qualify for.

6.What have you done for yourself this week?
Worked on my revamped business website for a few hours tonight, which has been "coming soon" for like 8 months. Oye. I'm SO ready to launch that thing. I need more hours!

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related!

    Archibald's Opposites

This is DD's favorite book, and it's pretty much the only thing I've read recently. She calls it, "Ah-bee-dahb" ... I seriously love her baby-talk.

We also read "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" over and over. I don't mind either of these because they have good rhythm and rhyme to them... I pretty much just recite them to her. Smile

    DIA

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? (Remember it doesn't have to be adoption related!)

AR: We finally have everything we think we will need for a 2 week out of state stay. We did a trial run of packing the car.

NAR: Just found out that a paper I helped write was accepted for publication. Great news for someone whose career/promotions depends in part on getting stuff published.

3.Where in the process are you at?

Matched and waiting, but not much longer. Due date is end of this month.

    4. How are you feeling this week?

Anxious and excited. I FINALLY had my first adoption related dream.

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?)

See above. Passing the time by trying to make progress on the dissertation, obsessively checking my phone to make sure we didn't miss the "I'm in labor" call, and spending time with DH.

6.What have you done for yourself this week?

Nothing much yet, but have a breakfast with friends planned for end of the week.

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related!

I finally made time to read something non-school and non-adoption related, and was totally disappointed by the book... it was The Belles of Charleston. I was hoping for a brainless but engaging read... I got one of out of two. :(

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?) Wait to be matched.  To pass the time, I have been going to a new gym and I have been doing horseback riding lessons.

6.What have you done for yourself this week? I have been going to the beach and reading a lot more.

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related! Fly Away by Kristen Hannah.  It is the sequel to Firefly Lane.  I loved both books!!

After 1 IUI, 3 IVF's with CGH/CCS testing, 10 early miscarriages, and lots of tears and frustration, we are moving on to Domestic Infant Adoption!  We are so excited to see what the future holds.

We bought a crib- it was as much for our child as it was for me. It was a big step as it actually means it's happening and I'm not afraid to buy baby related items.

I completely understand! When we bought ours (likely a bit too soon) it was mostly for me, but it was still a wonderful moment. We enjoyed it so much!

    What crib did you buy?

We went with: https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Childrens-Products-Silverton-Natural/dp/B00B57PFB6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373415488&sr=8-1&keywords=natural+crib+Delta  off of amazon after going to babies r us, buy buy baby, and a few VERY overpriced furniture stores. One store wanted  $1700 for a crib- umm... that's more then my first car. It is a really basic crib but it matches a dresser/changer we were handed down and I figure its gender neutral. We bought a wood book case, a teal bench, and a green cabinet to bring color into the room as we're doing a jungle theme.

  • I haven't checked in here in a long time so here goes...

    1. What kind of fostering/adoption process are you working towards? What age(s) is/are the kiddo?

We are a fost-adopt home, currently open for adoption placements only. We have had a sibling set of two girls, ages 3 years and 20 months, for the past 20 months.

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? (Remember it doesn't have to be adoption related!)

Gay marriage in CA! My DW finally get to plan our wedding!

3.Where in the process are you at?

We met with ASW today and discussed finalizing the girls adoptions in August or early September.

    4. How are you feeling this week?

I could stand to start lifting weights again, I've gained weight and it's bothering me, otherwise I feel great.

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?

We are deciding whether we would like to renew our foster license and stay open to be matched with a boy (we have four girls) or let our current license expire and restart the whole process when we buy a larger house.

    6. What have you done for yourself this week?

Walk away from battles with my PTSD afflicted SN child, she knows how to push my buttons and I've learned walking away is better for me.

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related!

I haven't been reading lately, I've been itching for a new Kristin Hannah book but haven't made the time to buy one. I downloaded a few books to my phone but haven't been interested enough to start reading them.
  • 1. What kind of fostering/adoption process are you working towards? What age(s) is/are the kiddo?

    DIA

2.What is your most recent milestone or accomplishment that you would like to share? (Remember it doesn't have to be adoption related!)

We ordered, received and are currently assembling our nursery furniture set!

3.Where in the process are you at?

    Waiting to be matched

    4. How are you feeling this week?

Anxious and frustrated - seems to be a theme that I'm expecting to stick around until placement.

    5. What?s the next step in your journey? (If you?re waiting to be matched or waiting for the baby/kiddo to arrive, what are you doing to pass the time and prepare?)

Meeting the family who will bring our child into this world and change our lives forever.  We've been keeping busy with projects around the house - nesting?  Cleaning out items that have been stored for 4 years, having a garage sale, had our carpets cleaned and having a painter come next month.

6.What have you done for yourself this week?

Nothing yet, planning a pedicure tomorrow or Friday :)

    7. QQTW: What is your favorite book that you have read lately? Doesn't have to be adoption/fostering related!

I just finished re-reading books 1 and 2 and reading for the first time book 3 of the Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver.  Wonderful series - though I think it's aimed for a younger crowd, so it was an easy read!
