Bed Rest - Interesting Article

I just joined this Board after my first IVF cycle was unsuccessful. I'll be back at it with a FET in September.  Occasionally I Google IVF news and today I found this. It basically says best rest immediately after a transfer and the following days is not necessary.  I bed rested for two days, but got up immediately after transfer.  I also did acupuncture before and after transfer.   Curious what you ladies did/recommend?  I want to do the right thing for the FET!

Wishing success for all of you.

Re: Bed Rest - Interesting Article

  • Yet another example of how much of a crapshoot IF treatment is!

    I am at a "non-bedrest" clinic...

    Married: 7/2/11 TTC: 12/2011
Me: 31, PCOS DH: 37, low morph and low counts

    4 medicated TI, 1 IUI+Femara, 1 IUI+GonalF = BFNs
    IVF #1 Lupron/GonalF (Dec 2012)= 30R, 21M, 21F with ICSI, 18 HIP frosties!!!
    FET in August 2013

  • It's so crazy how much it varies. I got up immediately after the transfer (with my RE's blessing, of course) because I have never had to pee so badly in my life. But, then he made me lay down for 20 minutes and do bed rest for 2 days. It didn't work.

Now of course all I wonder about is whether I should have ran to the bathroom like I did right afterwards....so many what ifs when you have a failed cycle, that's for sure.

  • Interesting. I was at a no bed rest clinic. I was up right after the transfer was over. No laying down and letting things settle. I didn't like that part. We went to lunch after and, while I wasn't on strict bed rest, I did just take it easy. I went to my IL's and hung out. We went out to eat, movies, etc. It was a BFN. Of course, because I like to blame myself, I blame it on me doing too much, even though I know this isn't true!

    My Blog

  • I am at a bedrest clinic. Strict for the day of and then 4 more days of laying around relaxing.
  • Sig warning

My RE has me lay down for 15-20 minutes immediately after the transfer.  Then it's 36 hours of bed rest, but not strict.  He says on day of transfer, to rest 90% of the time, the day after rest 60% of the time, and two days after to rest 30% of the time.

After my IVF transfer, I made myself stay on bed rest for 3 days, even though I didn't have to.  I had a BFP but miscarried.  For this FET, I wasn't nearly as strict with myself.  I took it easy, but got up from the couch more often and walked around.  It's a BFP, so who really knows what's best to do!  Thanks for the article.

Also, I'm so sorry your cycle didn't work.

  • I was told bedrest or light activity the day of transfer then return to regular activity the day after. I laid in bed some of the day but did get up to go to the restroom, couch, kitchen, etc but didn't really leave the house other than to take the dog out quickly and I got a BFP. I don't really think strict bedrest is required but it couldn't hurt.

My RE also had me lay on the stretcher for approximately 20 mins immediately after the transfer.

  • Ugh... thebump ate my post.

Short version... had to stay laying down for 5 min immediately after transfer and then bed rest for 24hrs. Could sit on couch if you used an ottoman and kept legs up.

I really think it's prob not helpful. But I think its good to take a day to be lazy after all we go thru w/ IF on top of our daily lives. I honestly think staying as positive and stress free as possible is more important than bed rest.

  • My clinic is a no bed rest, nothing more I can or can't do to help or impede the natural process once transfer is complete.

I did, however, lay there for 30 min immediately following transfer.

  • For both of my transfers, I had to lie down for 10 minutes after transfer, then I got up to pee.  I went out to lunch, then went home and watched TV, but was not on bedrest.  I went to work the next day.  Both transfers were BFPs (they were miscarriages, but that is likely chromosomal and is not related to activity after transfer).

I think the bed rest thing is BS.

  • My clinic does 2 days bed rest. I've adhered to that and have yet to see a bfp After 2 ivc cycles. I don't think I'll be as strict on myself this time.

  • They have me up right after it is over.  I go to the bathroom (relief!), change, and head home.  They say to take it easy that day (I tend to watch movies on the couch).  Afterwards, no big changes except no sex & I don't really exercise.  I had 3 BFPs doing this (and one day I actually went back to work after the transfer!).

    My TTC Journey:
Dx: Hypothalamic amenorrhea / mild PCOS (Pretty much a hormone/ovulatory disorder)
Progesterone to induce period w/ the goal of Clomid - never got period (September 2011). Referred to RE.
Femera - never responded to the meds (December 2011)
Clomid with TI - BFN (February 2012)
    Injectables (Menopur) - hyperstimulated/canceled (March 2012)
Injectables #2 (Menopur) with TI- BFN (May 2012)
IVF - OHSS (transfer canceled), but 11 frozen! (June 1012)
    FET - 1 transferred on 8/09/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 350.3; Beta#2: 365; Beta#3: 157. Biochemical pregnancy.
    FET # 2 - 1 transferred on 11/01/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 337; Beta#2: 769. BFP!!! 1st ultrasound 11/28/12 showed heartbeat, but measuring 5 days behind. 2nd ultrasound 12/05/12 - miscarriage.
    FET # 3 - 1 transferred on 1/24/13. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): BFN.
    FET # 4 - 2 transferred on 3/21/13.  Bet #1 (11dp5dt): 660; Beta#2: 1,300.  Miscarried at home @ 6 weeks.

    FET # 5 - 2 transferred on 7/12/13.  Beta #1 (10dp6dt): BFN.
Attempted an IUI in late August 2013, but didn't respond well.
IVF #2 with PGS - Stims started 10/28 with retrieval on 11/11.  Of 14 mature eggs, 10 fertilized, 4 made it to Day 5 & 1 made it to Day 6. We did PGS on the Day 5 embryos, and 3 of 4 were normal. Had ET on 11/17. Beta #1 (8dp6dt): 203. Beta #2 (10dp6dt): 618. We since had two ultrasounds & on 12/19, our RE released us to the OB.  On 1/02/14, we had our first ultrasound with the OB where we heard the heartbeat.  We are so thankful for the blessing & crossing every finger & toe for a healthy & successful pregnancy.
