WM of 2 and tall husbands what do you drive?

With another little one on the way, we are realizing our Car isn't going to fit all four of us. I have a tall husband, which makes our search for a new vehicle more difficult. I am not against a mini van, but where we live, I need to have four wheel drive. Any suggestions?

  • Honda Pilot.  I can drive up to three kids in my car in the normal back seat, plus I have a third row for when we are schlepping more people.

(disclaimer - I don't actually have two kiddos, but I do have a tall DH)

  • I drive a mazda CX7 - it's tight with 2 kids + H and we can not have a RF seat behind the driver if H is driving.  It's awd and otherwise I like it a lot - maybe look at the CX9 -it's the next size up.

H drives a truck and loves it - Ram 1500 crew cab.  The cab is bigger than the interior of my car. We all fit comfortably and it has really become our "family car".

Agree with Honda Pilot.  We have one and it is a great size.  I am not a large car fan at all but I don't mind driving it, either (DH drives it most of the time).

I'm getting an Expedition EL but we also have 2 large dogs that travel with us a lot so we need lots of space.

  • H is 6'3 and we have 2 kids.  He drives a Ford Escape.  I drive a Mazda 3 that I love, but he says it's too small for all 4 of us. :)
  • I don't quite qualify to answer as I only have one, not two...but DH is 6'2.  I drive a newer (2012) Jeep GC...I do most of the driving in it meaning he sits in the passenger seat - LO is still rear facing behind the passenger seat and DH has plenty of leg room (so much so that when I sit over there, I feel like it is too much leg room and I need to move the seat forward).  Prior to this Jeep, I had an '08 and not nearly as much leg room (or even cargo space).

  • We just bought a Toyota Sienna, which is available in AWD but we don't need it where we live. The two seats in the center row slide back and forth just like the front seats, which is nice. So if you don't need a lot of leg room in the 3rd row you can push the seat behind the driver way back and have plenty of space for a RF carseat and a tall driver.

  • MH is 6'6".  I only have one kid right now, but she is tall and we wanted to ERF as long as possible which meant we had to get the Diono Radian.  After a truly exhaustive search, the only car that worked for us was the Honda Pilot.  I really like it.

  • Not sure how tall your husband is but my ex is6'3 and fit into my jetta with no problems. I'm sure that you can look into the other VW options that have 4 wheel drive on them, but with my Jetta it is a beast in the snow with good tires on it and i've never had an issue. I fit 5 adults into the jetta w/o an issue, and now that there is a car seat i can fit two adults in the back seat w/o an problems.
  • I have a Toyota Sienna 2011.  I love it, the backup camera, power sliding doors, its awesome.  They do make an AWD version, if you are willing to spend the extra money.  My DH drives a Dodge Charger, which is a large sedan, and we can comfortably fit all 4 of us in there.  I think it would be challenging to get a 3rd carseat in there though.

  • I drive a four door Jeep Wrangler.  We have three kids across the back.  It is tight when DH is in the passenger seat though, since DS is rear facing behind that seat.  The girls are in boosters in the middle and drivers side back seat, and there is plenty of room for DH on that side.  Once we switch around DS's car seat, DH will have enough room on that side too, but for now he usually drives when we take my car.

He drives a Police Interceptor with the same configuration in back, and there is plenty of room in that - though I am guessing that isn't what you had in mind (and it doesn't have 4WD).

DH and I married 8 years. Mom of three, stepmom of one.

  • Not quite there yet, but I drive a Toyota Corolla. DD was ERF until 2y9m in a beast of a carseat behind the passenger. She is now FF and will move behind the driver while LO#2 will be behind the passenger. DH is 6'3" and I am 5'7"

  • If you will have a rear facing seat behind the driver (not sure how old your 1st child is), then I would take the seat car shopping w/ you and have him put his seat comfortably to drive and then see if the RF seat fits behind him. We were shocked to find that we could not comfortably (for him, he had to sit a little cramped and couldn't do it for longer than a drive around town) fit a RF infant carrier behind MH in his 2004 Acura MDX when our twins were born and he is only 6' so when it was time to buy the convertible seat, we actually carried them all out to the parking lot & went with one that allowed him to sit slightly more comfortably...  With RF more prevalent now, I wonder if the car manufacturers are making back seats maybe a little deeper if they're trying to target families, but I'm not sure.
We have a Toyota Highlander now w/ the 3rd row and removable console b/w the middle seats. We like it but the third row is nothing to write home about, it is still quite cramped bakc there when we try to get ppl back there. But I hear the 2014 has a lot of great new features...

  • We have a Toyota 4 Runner and it is perfect for our tall family.  (DH is 6'4", I'm 6'0" and DS is off the charts!).  I'm not a mini-van kinda gal, so we'll always be in a SUV of some kind.

There will be plenty of room in the back for baby #2's car seat.

  • We only have one right now, but we have easily fit three adults, dog and one child seat in my 2010 Outback.  H is 6'3'' and there is plenty of room, we've had E's seat behind driver and behind passenger, position didn't matter, H could still put his seat back far enough in each position.  #2 shouldn't be a problem for us.

FWIW, H drives a VW GTI and he has E's seat behind the driver in his car too.  He doesn't have a an issue with space.

We have a Britax Marathon in H's car and Britax Roundabout in the Outback.  Also, I LOVE my Outback!

ETA: E is still rear facing in both our cars.

  • Dodge Grand Caravan (ES AWD) and a Mini Cooper S. I'm not a real minivan person, but I'd rather have gone for the Odyssey. Our rf seat of choice is a Radian with angle adjuster, and yes fits in the Mini with tall drivers.
  • Toyota Sienna is what our friends with tall DH and four kids drive.  Two of their children still use booster and cat seats.  They have mentioned a few times how much they love their car.
  • My DH is 6'7" and our car choices are limited for him. He drives a Honda Accord and I drive a Kia Sedona and he fits fine in both. I know he fits a Honda Pilot and any of the larger SUV's and truck (Escalade, Durango, F150, etc.) Before we bought our cars, we went to the annual car show to see what he fit into for head and leg room before we started looking. No sens in getting interested in something that he cannot fit comfortably in.
