Success after IF

After baby #1 when do you get back on the IVF train for baby #2?

Hi! I am the new mom to a beautiful baby boy (he's 10 weeks tomorrow). It took us 3 long years for him to get here. I would love to watch him grow and have a sibling for him in 2 years but I went back to my RE for a check in and my AMH is .19. I almost fell off my chair when I heard the message. Time for me is ticking. When do you (or did you) start trying for #2? I feel like I need to start asap. Not happy with this latest news. ugh.
Me: 34 - low ovarian reserve
DH: 40 - no issues

3 failed IUI's

IVF #1 3/12 - 13 eggs, 9 fertilized,  2 transferred (1 grade 2 blast, 1 early blast), no frosties, 3/30/12 - 9dp5dt spotting, BFNs

IVF #2. 7/12 - 18 days of stims, 3 mature eggs, 3 fertilized (ICSI), 3 transferred (9, 8, 7 cell) on day 3.  First beta - 8/21/12 = 105, beta #2 - 8/23/12 = 268, beta #3 - 8/30/12 = 2,352. 2nd u/s - 9/4/12. Baby Boy born 5/1/2013.

IVF #3 Now (12/13). AMH is very low - 0.19. ER (12/5) 12 eggs, 10 mature, 7 fertilized using ICSI. 3 transferred (8,8,8 cell - all grade 2) on day 3. First beta - 12/21/13 = 126, beta #2 - 12/23/13 = 400, beta #3 - na (office was closed for new year's). First sonogram - TWINS aka OMG! -

Re: After baby #1 when do you get back on the IVF train for baby #2?

  • Unless you had complications during pregnancy that would warrant waiting longer, I think the only factor most need to consider (outside of the whole IF sucks emotionally and financially stuff of course) is when you are ready to wean if you are BFing.   We were doing FET for baby #2, so I made our first consult about a month before I was ready to start weaning....so when DS was almost 11 months.  Our first cycle, had it been successful, was about 3 months later and would have put the kids about 2 yrs apart exactly.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

I didn't see what your original stats were, but it looks like we are in a very similar boat!!!  I am also 32 and I went back to get my AMH tested at about 6 months after LO was born (and I wasn't breastfeeding so hormones were back to normal and I had had 4-5 periods) and my AMH was undetectable!!!!

My LO is currently 10 months and we aren't starting back with ART yet.  But I also had a high risk pregnancy (pre-e that resulted in LO having IUGR) and a C-section so while I want a second child, I'm not ready to jump back into meds and monitoring and all that.

IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier
    2011: FSH 13.3 & E 99; AMH 0.54 2nd FSH 6.2 E 40's AFC: 8
BFP from Clomid/IUI ~ Pre-e and IUGR during pregnancy ~ DS born 9/4/12
    Feb./March 2013: AMH less than 0.16 (undectable) and AFC = 4;
BFP from supps ~ DS#2 due May 2014

  • I don't think that your AMH numbers would be that reliable at only 10 weeks PP. what did your RE say?
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I was hoping IBackBevo would reply! She had a similar experience and has done a ton of research. For us DS was a year old when we started trying to cycle again. I really wanted to BF for a full year. He was two yrs 4 months when we had our daughters in May.

After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!

Surprise! Baby #4 is due in March!
  • Did you try naturally or go straight to the FET?  I had a c-section and my milk supply was terrible so I stopped pumping the second my son got his shots. I am so nervous that we won't be able to have another.

Also, how is it with twins and a 2 year old? When people told me babies were hard, it didn't quite describe how hard. I couldn't imagine 3 under 2 but I love this baby so much I bet it's great!

  • My issues were a blocked tube and AMA (turned 39 last March and gave birth that June).  Both my OB and RE said to do my best to try again before turning 40, which didn't leave much time.  BF'ing didn't work for me, I had a terrible supply no matter what I tried, so I quit after 5-6 weeks of trying, instead of the 3 months I had planned on.

I saw the RE after my first PP period, did my testing, and got started the next cycle, which was in November.  We were very lucky to find success again with a slightly different protocol (did antagonist first time, MDLF the second time) on the first try.

So, if the RE is on board, and you're ready, it's really never too soon!
