Babies: 3 - 6 Months

milk allergy, eczema, and reflux

Ok so first off let me say that I work in the medical field as someone who sees kids frequently with developmantal delays/disorders so quite naturally I worry myself sick over my child.

My little boy was born in January of 2013 so he is about 5 months old. We initially tried breastfeeding (8 days) due to medical issues with me, no milk supply, mastitis, a poor latch/suck, and over a pound weight loss in my little guy we went to formula feeding. So to make a long story short my LO wound up with reflux at 4 weeks, eczema at 6 weeks, and bloody stools at 2.5 months. So we went to alimentum (using hydrocortisone cream and MANY different creams/lotions, and also zantac and eventually prevacid). As of right now my LO is now off of Zantac and his xpitting up has GREATLY decreased. He is not sitting up yet but can roll well. He is making all kinds of noises, loves interactions with his mommy and daddy (wants human interaction ALL the time), and smiles and giggles all the time. His eczema is still pretty severe except for the 2 weeks we are allowed to use hydrocortisone. We are supposed to see a dermatologist in August.

So my questions are:

*What in the world should I do for his eczema: I have tried vanicream, cetaphil restoraderm, Aveeno products, and aquaphor. Right now the things that work the *best* are straight vasoline at every diaper change and a bath each night. Even with this his skin is still red, bumpy, and inflamed looking. It is not infected (Dr. saw it and stated it wasn't). Would Neocate or Elecare help!?

*Also being in the medical field I am terrified of developing Autism and I have read online (though I know I shouldn't) that a lot of kids with reflux, milk allergy, and eczema wind up with Autism, Aspergers, or Sensory issues.
Any moms out there with previous refluxers, milk allergic, and/or eczema calm my fears?! We are already on an alternative vax schedule because all the vaccines terrify me as well.

As hard as it is...stop googling.  I've worked with special needs kids and have studied autism.  There is no conclusive research.  You are only going to worry yourself with something you have no control over.  Your baby has reflux, milk allergy and eczema, focus on helping him as he currently is and not on what it could become.

My 4 month old has reflux and milk allergy.  In time she will out grow both and go on to be a perfectly healthy child.  We will deal with any future events in the future.

It sounds like you are actively doing what you can to help him with all 3 "conditions" try not to stress yourself out more. Odds are he will soon outgrow the milk and reflux on his own.

  • Kara does it clear only when you are using come right back or does it stay gone? Our hydrocortisone clears it but it instantly comes right back within 2the days of stopping no matter how much I moisturize.
    Thanks!
  • My DS also had reflux, eczema and reflux. He was so fussy and uncomfortable, even on Nutramigen. He screamed for hours straight in pain. We switched to neocate and he has been a new baby! Eczema and reflux are pretty much gone. They all go hand in hand with a MPSI. DS#1 was the same way, except I BFed him for a year, adjusted my diet. He was able to tolerate dairy around 7 months. He is on track if not ahead developmentally.

  • Not to freak you out more (because the link I'm going to post will say that it's an effective treatment for spectrum disorders)...  but DS2 has/had a milk protein and dairy sensitivity that was treated with accupressure.  Maybe there is someone that can treat the allergy in your area...

DS had two treatments, I am back to eating dairy and DS is doing so, so, so much better.  I wouldn't have believed it, but I really do think it worked.

  • My DS1 had all three of these things and my DS2 has the eczema/reflux.  Both are far from autistic. :)  Usually it's genetic.  Both my husband and I have all three too.  Add asthma to the list for DH, DS1, and I.  DS2 we'll see about, but I bet he has it too.  We did a combo of bath every night with bar soap (Dial works best for all of us!) and cetaphil lotion/hydrocortisone.  Lately, I've switched it to California Baby shampoo/wash (the no scent kind) with a bath every night.  Then I started coating both kids in coconut oil twice a day.  Within a week, neither has any eczema any longer!  It's definitely what we will stick with!  I'm about to take up the same routine because I itch horribly.

  • We use olive oil on his head for cradle cap! I will def try the coconut oil! We also use either California baby wash or cetaphil wash. The California baby lotion stings horribly when he's inflamed (I tried it on my skin).
