Bedsharing with a mobile baby

LO is 9 months and is on the go.  I try to put him down in the pack-n-play next to our bed for naps and to start out the night.  But inevitably, there are times when he won't sleep in his pack-n-play and will only sleep in our bed.  I'm really afraid of him climbing out during these times when I'm not in bed with him.  We have a side rail on the bed, and I usually stack pillows around him so he can't get around (it's a great way to use my pregnancy pillow that I don't have room to store otherwise).  But as he gets better at pulling himself up and climbing, I'm afraid he's going to fall out of bed.

What have others done to ensure that older babies can't get out of bed?

I would LOVE to transition him so he can sleep more on his own - I never intended to bedshare, but I work and he wakes up a lot in the middle of the night and it has been hard to get him back to sleep.  I need sleep and bedsharing has been the only way I get some.

Re: Bedsharing with a mobile baby

  • A lot of working mamas find bedsharing to be a great way to get more sleep while having lots of snuggle and nursing time to make up for the separation during the day. And LOs love it too!

When DS started crawling we did 2 things. First, we put our bedframe in the garage and put the mattress on the floor, so the distance wasn't too big. Second, we started teaching DS how to crawl off the bed safely, by laying on his tummy, spinning around so that his feet were off the edge, and lowering himself off feet first. He picked it up in just one day.

We recently put our mattress back on the bedframe and put up a bedrail, and he's old enough now to be more careful as he scoots off the bed.

ETA: One other thing you could do is set up a second mattress just for him on the floor next to your bed. You can nurse him to sleep there, and move to that mattress if he wakes and needs you or needs to nurse. That way you're still getting good sleep, he's in a safe place, and you can bedshare as needed.

  • We were worried about LO crawling off the bed, so we transitioned her to the crib.  It was hard at first, and sometimes I miss cuddling with her, but she's getting great sleep now and so are we.
