Pregnant after IF

Vanishing Twin Syndrome

Good moring Bumpies!

I just left my RE's office. Next week should be my last appointment with my RE. My little bean's heartbeat was 129. I was so excited! We were also excited to see that we had another sac developing, however this one had no heartbeat. My RE said this could be Vanishing Twin Syndrome. Has anyone ever heard of this or had it?

He said the other one is strong and should be just fine.

Re: Vanishing Twin Syndrome

  • We had a vanishing twin at about seven or so weeks. Saw/heard both heartbeats at seven weeks and then at nine weeks one baby had quit growing, apparently right around the seven week mark. Second sac was still present at 12 week ultrasound, but haven't heard that they can still see it.

I'm now 26 weeks pregnant with a girl and it has had no bearing on her development at all! No symptoms of any sort with the vanishing one either.

I read an article (years ago, likely refuted a million times since) that there was a theory that all of us start as twins, but most, obviously, become singleton pregnancies. Sort of like "here are two embryos to try," and the "better" embryo is the one designed to survive.

The most interesting part of this article, was the theory that left handers result from mirror image twinning where the righty is the one that vanishes.

Again, this may have been widely refuted!

  • We had the same situation. At the first ultrasound at 6.5 weeks there were 2 sacs but the second wasn't quite as far along, so they wanted to see it the next week. At 7.5 weeks it was still there but hadn't grown and the RE confirmed it wasn't viable but would have no effect on the one that was growing and doing well.

The RE didn't seem concerned and honestly we were a bit relieved. We only transferred one embryo because we didn't think twins were a good choice for us and we weren't sure what we were going to do.

  • You guys are awesome! Thank you so much for the feedback! I was a bit worried. Happy at first about the thought a twins but now I see this is common it makes me feel better!

    Thanks again

  • It's pretty common in pregnancy now that we have ultrasound technology available to us so early one. We have 2 embryo's growing beautifully. Both had strong heartbeats at 8 weeks. Went back at 10 weeks and Baby B had stopped growing shortly after that ultrasound. I was devestated at first, but that was the point of us putting back to embies- hoping at least one would continue to develop into a healthy baby. Twin B was almost totally disappeared by 20 weeks- had they not known about that demise of a twin early on, they wouldn't have known they were looking at a disolving sack.

  • I have a vanishing twin also. I can't see your sig cause I'm mobile bumping but apparently very common with IVF.

We didn't find the second sac until I was 8 weeks along and having terrible spotting. I don't know how they missed it before. I'm 12 weeks now and my healthy baby is growing like a weed, but the 2nd yolk sack still shows up on my ultrasounds. It never developed past 6 weeks and drs said it never will. It will eventually fade away. They said it won't effect baby A. But I'll admit, it does tug at me a little to still see that non growing second sack on my ultrasound screen.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I had my six week ultrasound today. 1 sac has a strong heartbeat while there is a second empty sac lagging behind. It wasn't visable last week and suddenly appeared this week. Since this morning I have had some spotting which the doctor believes could be related to the non developing second sac.
I really appreciate you posting this as I am worrying myself sick.
