Work from Home?

I need to contribute to our income, but I am having a hard time finding a nanny job that allows me to stay with our little one.  (We aren't comfortable putting him in day care at such a young age.)  Who knows of some good work from home gigs?  I need something that brings in a decent amount of money, but requires little start up money, as things are already as tight as they can get.  I don't have a lot of experience with anything besides child care, it's what I've always done, so something with little to no experience to start, but I'm willing to work hard to learn what I need to know to be successful.  I'm sure there are other mommies in the same boat as me, help me out!! :)  Thanks!!

Re: Work from Home?

  • I don't think there are any good work from home jobs. If you can't afford to SAH off of one income, you'll need to get a job.

  • I work from home and it's VERY VERY difficult. Trying to get work done during naps, waking up at 4 am to squeeze hours in and staying up to midnight some nights... It's not easy at all. It became so stressful on me and my marriage that we ended up putting DS in daycare two days a week so I could get my hours in and get some sleep. Now, if you are just looking for part time work without any deadlines, completely on your own, it may be a different story. If your only experience is childcare, perhaps you should see if you can babysit or nanny part time for a mom or dad that works outside the home. You can offer reduced rate, stay with your own child and get money and help her/him out at the same time. Just a thought.

  • Go back and read your post, I think the specifications you are looking for are impossible to find.  Not trying to be mean, just realistic.

I watch another baby in our home full-time, which brings in a little extra money and I can stay home.  But it's definitely not a substitute for a second income if that's what your family needs.

  • Rather than nannying, start a home day care, or just do babysitting in your home.
  • I am a SAHM and I have recently done a few mystery shops. If you do not know what it is basically you sign up with a third party company to shop a specific store and secretly evaluate their customer service. Then you fill out a survey about the shop. Sometimes it seems to take more time than it is worth but you can generally do it on your time and when the check you forgot about comes in the mail it is great. If you go this route be sure to use legit websites.
  • I'm in direct sales with Rodan and Fields and love it.  I work about 10 hours a week and get to do it around my sons schedule.  It's awesome!  Message me if you want to know more.

  • You could try freelance writing? It doesn't pay that well, but it can be done at home on your schedule.

  • I've been WAH since Feb (DH born in Nov.)

    It is so hard.

I thought for sure it would be the perfect solution, but I felt so much pressure to work while he was content (I got paid for the amount of hours I'd submit) and then at the same felt incredibly guilt while working because I thought I should be spending every second with him during his awake hours. When he was asleep, I'd work, but then I felt like I should be doing more household chores or just freaking resting.

If you can handle it, go for it. I liked not having to leave the house. But I struggled to be productive and happy about it.

In the fall I'm transitioning to a PT position out of the house. I think it will be much better for me. When I'm home, no thinking of work. When I'm at work, no interruptions and I know DS is in good hands.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • Some companies pay people to stuff envelopes from home. You'd probably just need to pick up the pieces from their office and return them there or take them to the post office when you're done. Some of these jobs pay by the piece, some pay by the hour.

Sounds like your only choice is taking in another kid or two.

Seriously, people who work from home 1) have a job that they are well-established at and have proven themselves and 2) have childcare. No one will pay you to stay home with your child.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I work from home and my 2 kids are in daycare full time. There is absolutely no way I could do my job (well) and watch my kids at the same time. As it is, a few days where my 3yo was sick I tried working while he watched a movie on the couch even that was hard. He constantly needed something!  And as previous posters have pointed out, in order to work from home AND make a decent amount of money you usually need to already be established with an employer. I work from home ONLY b/c my DH was transferred from NY to FL and in order for my company to keep me, they needed to allow me to work from home.

Besides, your kids need interaction throughout the day, if you can't/don't want to send them to daycare then you need to either accept that you won't be working or you need to work hours that your DH does not so you can trade off. I love that my kids are in daycare, they receive a ton of interaction and attention all day long and are in a learning environment. Things that I'd never be able to provide if they were here with me while I worked!
