food allergies

I can't seem to find an answer to this so I thought I would ask here. My MIL and DH both have some food allergies, MIL's are severe! It might be a strange question but Can something I eat be transferred to ds through my breast milk to cause an allergic reaction? I have been avoiding nuts and forgot to ask the pedi at his last appointment!

Re: food allergies

  • Yes it can be transferred in small amounts. With DS 2 I had to cut dairy bc every time I ate or drank anything with dairy he would be so fussy. At 2 he has a dairy allergy. With this baby I have to be careful with it also bc he will get a rash.

  • Definitely call your pedi. I also cut dairy with our little guy and it seems to have eliminated most of his witching hour and daytime fussiness. Our pedi told me that with her first she would always get super fussy when she ate Thai food. Turned out her daughter was allergic to peanuts which they found out when she was older.

  • I was just reading about milk protein intolerance today because I'm wondering if my LO has it. This page was really helpful for me and it has a lot of links to other pages and info. There is something in there about mom eating nuts having nothing to do with nut allergies later in childhood. Same for dairy.

Sorry, can't make it clicky on my phone. It was the first thing that popped up when I googled "milk protein intolerance in breastfed baby" if it's easier for you to find it that way.

Edit: in the link there should also be a dash in between baby health, and food sensitivity. Mobile bumping sucks.

  • yes, it can. My nephews severely allergic to dairy, eggs and nuts. When my SIL was breastfeeding she had to absolutely stay away from those items; or risk him getting hives or going into anaphylatic shock.
