Special Needs

Book Recs?

Hello all,

I am a lurker because I am a teacher that works a lot with students with special needs and I benefit from hearing from parents.

I am taking a grad school course this summer called exceptional children and youth and one of our assignments is to read a book/write book report that highlights the life of a person with a disability.

The class started today and the report is due a week from tomorrow.  Yikes!

My list of suggested book to pick from is below.  Any favorites?  I'll XP this on other boards as well.

Thanks so much!

Orchid of the Bayou

  • Can you read fiction? If so, RJ Palacio's Wonder is awesome! Beloved by children, parents and teachers alike.
  • Thanks everyone. I picked look me in the eye because I saw a few recs for it and the library had it when I went this morning.

I'm writing the other suggestions down for when I have more free reading time.

    Thanks again!
  • I am reading "Far From the Tree" right now. It is pretty heavy and discusses multiple topics regarding children who are not like their parents and how the parents lives are affected. Deafness, Autism, Schizophrenia, Multiple Disabilities, Genius, Criminal, etc are each a chapter with multiple personal stories about the topic.

  • Even though you have already picked a book, I would suggest Out of my Mind to anyone and everyone. It was a quick and heartwrenching book. It really opens up peoples eyes to what it would be like to be trapped in a body that doesn't work for you.
