Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby rolling over = sleep/mood disaster

Prior to my baby rolling over (who is 4 months and 1 week old) she was super happy and a pretty decent sleeper at night (8:30 pm - 3 am, feed, and then sleep again from 3:30 am - 7 am).

This weekend she learned to roll from back to belly and has not stopped rolling all day, every minute of the day.

Problem is - she only enjoys being on her belly for a short period of time then she cries so I am constantly going to her and flipping her. She also doesn't want to spend much time in her swing or bouncy chair. She is just overall cranky.

And night time...I barely sleep bc my once happy back and side sleeper now flips to her belly to sleep. Throughout the night when she tries to move around she fusses a lot and winds up waking herself up (can only roll in that one direction). So she has been waking a lot.

Also, her arm gets caught under her and even my doctor said to ensure she doesn't sleep on top of her arm.

Anyone experience something similar? When will this mood get better?I thought I heard babies can be fussy when learning new tricks?

  • This is kind of what the "4 month wakeful" can entail-your baby is not only learning a new trick, but is also not getting the same amount of sleep as normal. So all of that equals a tired, and confused baby.

Our LO rolled back to belly in the swaddle the weekend before last. So, we got rid of the swaddle and put her in the Merlin sleep suit. She can't roll when she's sleeping in that.  I give her ALOT of mat time and tummy time when she's awake, so she's still practicing rolling-she gets her arm stuck (which is why she could roll in the swaddle-no arms in the way) but eventually her flip will be aggressive enough to get her all the way.  Your LO is probably frustrated with not being able to turn all the way, and being "stuck" on her belly. But she wants to practice this new skill over and over. It's a phase and will pass :)

  • My son does this and he's 5 months old. I go into his room to check on him and I'll find him on his stomach. It scares me, because all I've been told is don't let them sleep on their stomach, because it will increase the SIDS rate. His arm gets stuck when he tries to roll back to his back. So i feel you!
  • We went through this with DD.  Our doctor told us if she rolled and got stuck on one side in her crib, not to help her turn back because she needs to learn how to do it on her own.  It took her about a week to figure it out and she went back to STTN.  It is another phase that will pass quickly.
  • We're going through the same thing!  She doesn't want to be on her belly, but can't stop rolling over onto it!  Best of luck to your babe...and you. :-)
