I just found out that BOTH of my twin boys (5 months) need helmets

( Does anyone have experience with helmets that they could share? Do the helmets hinder their development at all? I'm worried about them not hitting milestones because they're lugging around a big helmet. Were your babies bothered by them? Any tips or tricks you can share about making them comfortable. How long did your baby have to wear it? Obviously it's not an ideal situation but I know it's temporary and will definitely help them in the long run. Thanks!
Re: Helmets
DS needed a helmet for his plagiocephely (very distinct flat spot on the back of his head). I was originally not in favor of it when the pedi first mentioned it- but after careful thought I decided to go for it, I couldn't live with that guilt of not trying it for my son's sake. It barely effected DS, we worked our way up to 23 hours per day over a week span- by the end of the first week he was totally fine, even sleeping without any issue. The only bothering part was that it was summer, so he got really warm- but we just kept him in a onesie and that balanced his temperature.
They are very light weight, so it does not hinder their development at all. DS hit every milestone without any issues. DS wore the helmet from 3-7 months, so 4 months total. The worst part was me getting used to the stares at public places at first- but by the end of the first month I took pride in the stares, I was proud I was doing this for my son.
No, its not ideal, especially with our insurance denying coverage so it was all out of pocket for us...but I am SO happy I did it and would do it again if need be. I look at his nice round head and am so happy on the outcome. It was such a short amount of time sometimes I even forget we went through it!
We decorated the helmet with fun stickers and different themes, that was fun for us. I would also recommend cleaning it regularily because it can get stinky and dirty. Also, do it as soon as you can to get the optimum results, their head growth slows down and the results will be less and less the longery you wait. Feel free to PM me if you have any further questions and I can send you my email address. Good luck, you are doing a GREAT thing for your boys!!
