I love my doctor. I took in my birth plan today and she pretty much said "yeah, looks good, mostly how we do things anyway".
But she's on vacation for week 39 of my pregnancy. I'm sure the on-call is nice enough and I can book an appointment to meet her in advance, but I KNOW my doctor is cool with my plans and was awesome last time. She's family practise, so she generally does deliver her OB patients herself.
Re: Dear baby: don't show up during Dr's vacation
I'd feel the same way. You'll have a lot less push-back to worry about if you get your own OB. Meeting the backup like you said would be good - you could make her remember you pretty well with how sure you are of what you want and don't want at the hospital if she shows up for your birth!
Each pregnancy is different, but at what week did you have your first? Mine both came at 39w and my midwife said that women CAN trend the same gestation with subsequent pregnancies, even though each labor itself can be wildly different. That might either encourage you or worry you, sorry!

Edit because I'm an idiot
i am praying my OB is on call again when I go into labor.
he is the same OB that delivered me when i was born, my brother 12 years after that, and then my first DD.
my mom warned him at her lady appt last week i was going to start "harassing" him for his on call schedule at my next appointment lol. he came over from the office special to deliver my DD when he switched his on call day last time!
In the same boat here, too! My doctor (also family practice) is on vacation right now actually. On Thursday I have an appointment with the back-up to meet her but if I got into labor before then I won't get to meet her. Although I am sure she is great and I'm not worried about her... it would still be nice to have my doctor there.
My doula is on vacation the week after that, too. Haha! I better go until my due date or I won't have everyone there I want there!

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
I'm rooting for a baby in week 38 over week 40, that's for sure.
It's hot and I'm already kind of miserable. She keeps stretching into my ribs so I can't breathe and it hurts to sit.
I have my suspicions that DS was actually a bit before 40 weeks, but that's just based on when I had negative vs. positive pregnancy tests... he always measured about on track.
