Water in the summer?

To all you wise, more experienced mamas, I have a question. Since it's summer, and so dang hot out, should DS be drinking any water?

I feel like I've read that he shouldn't as babies can get "overhydrated" quickly, but I am also reading that I should start introducing a sippy cup soon.

Are small amounts of water okay? Or does he get enough hydration from his formula??

Re: Water in the summer?

  • As far as I understand they get all the hydration they need from either bm or formula.

  • I only put an oz or 2 in a sippy cup so that DS can practice everyday. If it is really hot, and we are outside, I will give him a chilled bottle of pumped BM to cool him off. He doesn't need the water, but it is not as messy while he is practicing with the sippy cup.

  • Everything I've read says that they do get enough hydration from breastmilk/formula.  I've even read that if you feel there's a chance of dehydration because of the heat, you can give more formula on that day.  I think at 6 months, you can give up to 2oz of water without the risk of overhydration.  Again, this is all from my own research, no actual experience here, but I hope that helps.

  • At that age they don't really need any extra water, but if you want to start practicing with a sippy cup (and don't want milk all over the place) an ounce or two shouldn't hurt either.

Just from our experience...when I started LO with the sippy I just wanted him to practice with a few sips of water.  But, I found that if I only put an ounce or two in the cup he couldn't tilt it back far enough to get to the water, but if I filled it all the way it was harder to gauge how much he was drinking because our sippies don't have volume marks, plus it was really too heavy for him to lift.  I guess the point of this rambling is that I wish I had bough smaller sippies with volume marks on the side!

  • At 4m baby is definitely getting all they need from BM/formula and does not need water.  We introduced sippies with water at around 9m and were told a few ounces were fine as long as it did not replace BM/formula.
