vacation car ride neccessities

We are going to myrtle beach which is 1011 hour car ride. What things are a definite to bring to keep kids occupied? We have the dvd players and leap pads. What other suggestions are there. Of course lots of snacks and hopes that they sleep at least a good portion but not holding my breath. Thanks!

  • Plan a few play ground stops. This helps. Also put in some new movies into the DVD player.

  • I have THIS travel potty and love it.  No dirty public bathrooms (or toilets that are too big), no creepy rest stops.  It takes regular gallon ziplock bags.  We have it in our van and all of our kids can do their business with the van doors closed, there's nothing dirty for them to touch, I keep hand sanitizer and Wet One's (good to keep in the car anyway).  It's been a life saver since PT'ing, normally just my 3.5 year old twins use it, but even 5.5 year old DS1 has used it.

ummmm...books and coloring if they like that .... Water wow books, the magic marker kind with the marker that makes pictures appear (not like regular drawing markers), tracing and dry erase crayons if LO likes to draw, highlights makes some good magazines w hidden pictures and other activities you can find them on amazon. ...

  • The thing that I've found helps the most on our long trips (heading on another 12 hour solo drive this weekend) is to make a long (like 2 hour) stop in the middle so they can get some energy out.  That usually brings on a nap afterwards as well.  Aside from the iPad, we do books, coloring, and a "grab bag" of small toys they pick out ahead of time.

We just did 5 hours and i was proud of us.....good for you going double!! Wow!

I set up the kindle with lots of shows and that was a good part of the ride. DS has an innotab so we got him some headphones at 5 below. Lots and lots of tiny bagged snacks. I portioned everything out so I was just handing back sandwich bag sized snacks to them. Books went further than I thought since both kids would just look through them. A few lift the tab books for DD too.

We left in the evening and i put the kids in pajammas.

    Good luck!

Get a bunch of new, inexpensive toys and books and surprise them with one every couple of hours in the car.
