1st Trimester

Insomnia and Anxiety :

Hi! This is my first pregnancy! Having a lot of trouble with horrible anxiety and
Insomnia.. I am exhausted but can't sleep, worrying over everything I have anxiety problems.. Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy and I'm only about 8 or 9 weeks along .. Scared about all these feelings. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice? Thanks so much xoxo!

Re: Insomnia and Anxiety :

  • Every little niggle drives my mind into over drive even if your not sleeping try and rest! Im taking one day at a time. Good luck!

  • Thanks!! I am doing a lot of walking during the day to stay active and try to tire my body out.. My mind just can't stop racing! It's awful.. I bought some easy reading books on my iPhone so I can read those while I can't sleep and my fianc is sleeping soundly.. Ugh! Lol
  • I have anxiety as well. In the past couple of weeks it has calmed down. I just take it one day at a time and I don't read things that will make me worry.
  • I also have anxiety. Have you talked to your OB about any safe anxiety meds you might be able to take? There are many safe ones. If you're not comfortable with that, just remember millions of women before you have been pregnant and been mothers. I found it comforting knowing that it is possible to get through! It's scary becoming mama, especially for the first time. Just take your pregnancy one day at a time.

  • I have anxiety and currently I am taking Prozac. It is life saver. There is no way I could get through this pregnancy without it.
  • Have you considered acupuncture?  I highly recommend it for both anxiety and insomnia.

  • Thanks ladies!!! Your replies are so helpful and knowing I'm not alone is the best feeling ever. I am going to the dr on Monday and am going to ask about medication. I was on Xanax prepregnancy, and I can't lie and say I haven't taken one here and there since I found out but I'm honestly trying to not take any at all... I don't know whether quitting cold turkey is best because I wasn't taking much, but I know weaning is safest. I feel if I weane I may never get off it : I'm not taking it daily as needed but still feel so guilty every time. I'm up every night til 34am and waking up 79am daily so I'm perplexed as to which is worse for baby... No sleep, small dose of medication?? Feeling lost the more I even type

  • Xanax is not safe for pregnancy and has a fairly high risk of birth defects. Please, please stop taking it. There are plenty of pregnancy safe options for you! Call your OB or call a psych and talk to them about it, they will be able to help you out. I recommend a psychiatrist personally. OBs mean well, but they are not specialized.

I took lexapro through most of this pregnancy under the care of a psychiatrist and with my OB's "blessing". Baby is healthy and so am I.

Pregnancy can be a b!tch to someone with anxiety. Some people feel better during pregnancy and others (*raises hand*) feel worse. Don't feel bad about getting some help!

  • I also have anxiety and have had some sleepless nights, just awake worrying.  I am on Lexapro and thank God because I think I would be a mess without it.  I think my midwife is going to wean me off during the second trimester.
