BF and Pumping

I am breastfeeding my 2wk old twins and pumping once in the morning and once at night to increase supply and build a little bit of a freezer stash. My question is, is twice a day enough pumping to effectively increase supply for the needs of twins? How often do you pump? How many ounces do you get?

Re: BF and Pumping

  • I did similar to you. I only pumped enough to give them one bottle a day and BFed the rest of the time. Continue pumping now because you will be making a lot of milk and te babies don't need that much yet! If you BF in demand you should have enough milk for them. Good luck!

I only pumped after the morning feeding. I have a great supply and was able to build a weeks stash before my return to work. I pump 40 ounces every day at work for 8 hours so no issues. Everyone is different though so what worked for some may not work for you.

  • I don't really know what works best because I only have done this the once but I used to pump for 5 minutes after every day feed.

PS - I wish I could have told Then Me that later on I wouldn't be able to keep adding to that stash because I stopped those extra pumps after a month or so. I guess I figured that I would be able to do that again if I just picked it back up and that wasn't the case.

  • PS - I pump about 20 ounces during a work day now. Everyone is way different on this though.

  • You should be pumping or breastfeeding AT LEAST 6 times a day to build your supply. the first 3 months are the most crucial time.

at that point I probably was only getting two to four ounces at a time tops . once my supply regulated out it was more like 6 ounces at a time.
