Single Umbilical Artery diagnosis...

***Single Umbilical Artery diagnosis...***

During a repeat A/S ultrasound at 22 weeks it showed that my baby has SUA.  I have another ultrasound at the end of July to track growth and check for abnormalities. My 22 week ultrasound showed the baby at normal size and no red flags for any abnormalities, so I am holding out hope that my baby is part of the 75% of babies with SUA that are born healthy. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with SUA, or any advice they would be willing to share.  TIA.

Here is some info on SUA, sorry its not clicky...

My DD had a SUA, which posed no problems during my pregnancy, but unfortunately I did not have a happy ending because we lost her due to a cord accident. The knot in her cord had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the SUA. The SUA just meant I was more closely watched and had a couple extra ultrasounds to monitor for IUGR. It was no big deal at all in my situation. Maybe try posting on the high risk board and see if there's anyone there who has further insight though. Sorry if that wasn't very helpful. GL!

I am so sorry for your loss.  Thank you for sharing your story.  I will look into the high risk board!

I had it with my daughter.  She went to 40 weeks growing normally.  The only issue was she had an enlarged kidney at birth which normalized At 6 months after monitoring with ultrasounds every two months.  Stay positive!

  • I've only lurked with no intro sorry! DS 2 is due oct. 12

My DS had SUA he was born in Aug. 2010. I only found sad, sad stories online and I was so worried but everything turned out fine. My ob referred me to peri which monitored the baby 34 times in the last couple months of my pregnancy. He performed a fetal echo and everything looked good. Around 30 week I started going in to my OB twice a week for fluid level check and NSTs. Only once was my fluid level low and they sent me to LD. I hadn't had much water, so I chugged some and once I got there they measured the level and sent me home. My dr and I agreed I shouldn't go over 40 weeks and I was induced at 39w 2d gave birth to a healthy baby boy two healthy kidneys and no heart problems. I did inform his pedi before his birth and once he was born he did a renal ultrasound.

Good luck and feel free to pm with questions! I'm sure everything will be fine.

Thanks for responding! I go see my doctor next week for my regular OB visit (she is on vacation this week), so I hope to get a game plan then and see if we need to do any testing beyond the ultrasounds.  If you don't mind me asking, did they do the additional testing because they saw something concerning, or just standard procedure?

  • They didn't see anything other than the SUA. Everything was just precautionary. My only advise is drink lots of water and keep track of the kick counts! My neonatologist cousin is the one who advised me to ask my ped. About the renal ultra sound. I don't know if that is the norm though.

I also had a fetal echo and monthly ulltraasounds for precaution. At the end I had NST frequently too.
