Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Giving medicine

Hi ladies. I don't post very often but have appreciated the advice over the past year. DS was diagnosed with an ear infection first one and prescribed amoxicillin. We are halfway through his prescription and would love to hear other moms tricks for giving meds. He's 12 months and hates the syringe, won't drink it from a bottle mixed with something. TIA!

Re: Giving medicine

  • DD used to hate the syringe but I found a position that worked like a charm!  I hold her like I would if I were breast/bottle feeding.  Cradle her across my body, her lower arm behind my back, and then I can hold her upper arm with the hand that's cradling her and put the syringe in with my free hand.  If you do it right you can also pretty much immobilize their head with the cradling arm (that terminology makes it sound worse than it is!).  Took a couple of times fighting that, too, and then she got used to it and now all I have to do is put her in that position and she opens her mouth for the meds.  Hope that helps!!

  • When DS wouldn't take his amox, it was a matter of the syringe itself. He wouldn't have anything to do with the big syringe that held the full 2-tsp dose, but he'd take it just fine if I split the dose and used two separate syringes that each held 1 tsp. I'd give him one dose, hand him the empty syringe to play with, and give him the second dose while he was distracted.

If you're mixing antiobiotics in with other foods or liquids, make sure you don't use formula, milk, yogurt, or other cultured foods. The medicine expends itself killing beneficial bacteria in the milk or yogurt, so you're left with a weakened antibiotic and milk or yogurt without any of its good stuff.

  • Thanks for the replies! It was a little easier tonight too, trying to hold him differently, blown on his face gently, sing songs... :
