paranoid 12 week question a/b heartbeats

today was my 12 week visit, I had my NT scan a few days ago so today was just talking about genetic testing results and hearing the heartbeat, very brief.

so my doctor pulls out the wand thing and rubs in on my belly to hear the heartbeats and we picked up the first without an issue, but we had some difficulty finding the other one. Finally she put the wand kind of back to where it originally was and said she heard the other. she said they were just really close together

now, in my paranoid mind, I'm thinking she just heard the same one twice. what also worries me is that they were sitting totally different not 3 days ago and were not right next to each other (left to right) but more like diagonal. i know they move and all, but has anyone had that where they're right next to each other?

I know that a dr would not just say she heard something if she didnt but i'm still paranoid. anyone have anything similar?

Re: paranoid 12 week question a/b heartbeats

  • This happened to me at an earlier appt 16 weeks. I was a bit of a nudge about it, and the dr finally brought in the ultrasound machine so I could see both heartbeats. It gave me great peace of mind. Maybe you could ask for that next time? The good news is that it gets easier to find them. Dr found them both quickly at my recent 20 week appt. I totally get it!

  • My OB only did u/s to find heartbeats. It's too hard with twins to find both using a doppler. I'd request an u/s or get a new OB.

I asked about this at an early appointment and OB told me that it was entirely possible that it was the same heartbeat twice. Hopefully you have an u/s scheduled soon to give you some piece of mind!

  • I felt that way that early in my pregnancy. I always left the OB wondering if she really heard 2. She must have been right because here we are at 28 weeks. When they are that small they can move around so much. I try to remind myself that they are the trained professional and know what they're talking about. I understand it's hard to convince a few worried mind of that.

All of this. But I'd still request an u/s for peace of mind

  • glad to know i'm not the only one who has felt this way.

thanks guys, ill call them tomorrow. i'm also anxious too because the next visit is 16 weeks, and i wanted to start telling people at 13 weeks, so i'd like to feel sure about it. i doubt im the first person who has called them requesting something like this.

i'm sure she knows what she's doing, but i'm very primitive- i need to see things and be sure of things to feel OK, lol.

IMO, if she's using a doppler on twins, she doesn't know what she's doing. If they're mo/di you need an ultrasound at every appt, period. Mo-anything especially, but even with di/di, most multiple moms get an ultrasound at every appt or at LEAST every month. Are you seeing an MFM? If you haven't been referred to an MFM, you also need to do that.

This exactly. No harm in asking.

  • My OB told me that it is almost impossible to find and differentiate between the 2 hbs because they are so small and close together. He said he really wouldn't even try to differentiate till 20 weeks.

  • got into huge argument asking for a sonogram- had to literally beg them.

then they get annoyed and throw around how this is going to cost me but they're doing me a favor.

whatever, at least i'll get a sonogram today, some peace of mind.

thinking about a new dr though...

I'd for sure find a new office. I'm sure they are both doing great.
