Bike recommendations for a 3yr old boy?

I'm coming off 3 months of bedrest and can't go look at bikes in person - will need  to order online...

Any specific brand/models you would recommend for a 3 yr old  boy? I think I'm looking for a 12" bike with training wheels. Something that will last as I have 2 more boys on the way.

Thanks!

Re: Bike recommendations for a 3yr old boy?

  • I know you said training wheels, but my DS LOVES his strider balance bike.  Look it up and watch the videos.  My DS can definitely balance already and can go quite fast on it. I love it because he requires no help from me and I can walk the dog while he rides.  My nieces had training wheels and they were always getting stuck on curbs, etc.  They required someone to help them.  DS never needs any help.  He can maneuver so well.

With that said, we got it last year for him for his 3rd birthday.  We think he's ready for pedals...hopefully no training wheels.  I wish we would have gotten it for him earlier.  So it may be better for your other kids.

I love it and think every kid needs one!

  • I agree on the balance bike.  ALl of mine went trike to balance bike.  Both girls are went straight to two-wheeler, no training wheels.  DD#1 on her fifth birthday, DD#2 around 3 yrs8 months.  DS is still on the balance (a week from his fourth birthday) but we plan to skip training wheels when he's ready, too.

  • My son is two and has a Firstbike.  My husband is a competitive mountain biker so he spent a lot of time researching the best one.  We had to buy the lowering kit because I don't think they are meant for two year olds!

  • This is the one we got for LO for his birthday- he loves it and it works great.

We didn't do a balance bike, just went right for this, and will deal with the training wheels the old school way.
