New dresser - getting rid of smell

Mobile: New dresser - getting rid of smell

Our dresser arrived for the nursery last week. I've let the drawers sit open trying to air them out. I put some charcoal sachets in them, also trying to get rid of the smell. It's not *that* bad and my sense of smell is probably heightened right now. But I hate the thought of putting LO's clothes into the drawers as I'm assuming the new clothes will pick up the scent of the drawers.

Any other ideas other than letting them sit open or putting charcoal sachets in them to soak up any existing smells quickly?

TIA!

  • A bowl of vinegar left in the closed drawers should help. I would leave it in there overnight. Good luck!

ETA: I knew a guy that worked at a car dealership. They would use this trick to take odors out of used cars. The vinegar should absorb the smell. If you are left with a slight smell of vinegar, that should dissipate within a couple hours. I use this trick in my microwave :)

  • We had that problem too! It took a few weeks of keeping the drawers out, but it finally doesn't smell anymore. We also cleaned each one out with ammonia/water and then wiped down with hot water and dried it. That helped. Not sure what was going on.

  • Would dryer sheets help with the smell? I'd also line the drawers once they aren't stinky anymore.

  • mine had a smell, too.  A few days of airing it out and it was fine.  The drawers are unfinished wood, so I don't think that scent will go away any time soon, but I'm ok with that.

  • I read something yesterday that said putting dry tea bags in shoes removes the smell. Maybe try that for the dresser.

  • I've been putting little cups or bowls of vanilla extract in smelly places. It totally gets rid of the smell quickly. Maybe try that?

  • Great, thank you ladies! I'm hoping for a quick fix so I can get that nursery organized. I think I'll wipe down first and then try the vinegar or vanilla approach.

This is what we do... My dad uses this method for appliances as well.

  • When I was a kid we would always make cinnamon ornaments at Christmas and then after we would kept them in our dresser drawers and they would smell yummy all year. (Sorry it's not clicky) Here's a like to how to make them: https://www.mccormick.com/Recipes/Other/Cinnamon-Ornaments

  • Putting a little bowl of baking soda in each drawer might help. I use that for fridge odors.

  • Sprinkling baking soda is my go to deodorizer!

  • Baking soda or vinegar to actually REMOVE the smell. Other suggestions above would certainly make it smell better, but I feel like they would just be masking the original smell instead of actually removing it.

Vanilla actually absorbs and removes the smell, not mask it. It even works with paint smells.

I think it's the alcohol that actually does the job. The vanilla scent is just a bonus.
