Age Appropriate Chores?

I'm thinking my 6 year old DS is at the age where he can take on small responsibilities around the house and start earning an allowance ($5/week).  I'm having a hard time coming up with much.  So far I have taking the trash out of the bathrooms, taking the dirty clothes to the laundry room each day and sorting them, and keeping his room straight (which he should really be doing anyway).  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'm looking for maybe 2 or 3 more things for him to do.  Thanks!

  • My 5 year old cleans his room and helps with laundry. I can't think of any suggestions for you at the moment, it sounds like your son is helping out a lot though!

  • Setting and clearing the table?

Feeding pets, if you have any?

    Helping put away groceries?

    Dusting or swiffering?

    Unloading dishwasher?

I think you'll be amazed at how quickly $5/week adds up to a lot of money in the hands of a 6 y/o.  Unless you have already mentioned the amount to him, you might want to start him at a lower amount, which will still seem to him to be a lot, and then give him a "raise" to $5/week in a year.

My 12 y/o gets $3/week from us + $2/week from the neighbor for scooping dog poop. Even at 12, she doesn't have a lot to spend $5/week on.  It's astonishing how quickly she has accumulated a LOT of money!  I still buy her clothes, but she pays for quirky art supplies and any junk she wants when she's out with friends.

  • feeding the dog

    clearing plates

    cleaning his room

    making his bed

    getting the mail

    putting his laundry away

In my house, 6 would be too young for unloading the d/w, as a lot of things are up out of DS's reach and I don't want him climbing a step stool with dishes in his hands.

  • We have our 6 yo keep her room clean and beds must be made each morning. Both girls will help me sort laundry. She also sets the tables for dinner.

  • My 6 yr old almost 7 year old folds towels and washcloths and puts them away.
  • My DS (will be six this month) dusts, puts away the silverware out of the dishwasher, folds clothes (I know most kids can't do this yet) and puts her clothes away. She also likes cleaning the inside of the toilet (which I watch her do).  I agree with PP..$5 is a lot for a 6 yo.
