metopic ridge update

I posted on here about a month ago concerned with a hard ridge that comes down the center of my sons forehead. He had previously wore a helmet for plageo and tort issues and I was worried about this latest development. Well, today we had our follow up appointment with Childrens Hospital Neurosurgery. The pedi had told us not to be concerned, it's normal but I needed a second opinion. .....paranoid mama here. Neuro did confirm it is a ridge, however it's nothing to be concerned about. Just watch and make sure it doesn't worsen though they think it won't since that part of the cranium closes at 3months. Since he had plageo before and his forehead on the right side slightly protruded before helmet therapy, the ridge went unnotoiced but now that his head circumfrance shape has been corrected, the ridge is more noticeable now. With the growth of more soft tissue on the forehead as his head continues to grow, it should make the ridge less noticeable over time. No surgery needed since it's so minor and really not noticeable to anyone but us parents and the Dr.s. I am sooooo relieved! I know the last time I posted about this, there were other helmet mamas that had the same concern with their LOs, so just wanted to give an update and tell you all that if you have a worry about it, never hurts to get a second opinion. It could've very well been a surgery issue but luckily it isn't extreme enough or impeding on head growth or development. Hope this helps someone else out there.

Now, we have the 15 month check up today as well, later in the afternoon. Poor kid. 2 doc offices in one day. Hope the next appointment goes just as well.

  • Hey Buzzbee! I am glad to hear everything is just fine with your little guy! i always see random things going on with my guys head as we continue our journey with plagio... can you believe he is still wearing a helmet!! he has been wearing it since september! we did just cut down hours to 18 hours a day instead of 23 hours... that was HUGE for us! good luck at the 15 month check up! :)

  • Congrats on the cutdown to 18 hours! I wish sometimes that DS had to wear his longer. It came off right when he started walking and hitting his head on everything! This kid and his head! The worrying over the last year has aged me a few years if you know what I mean. Lol. Hope things are going well with your LO and that you've started to see improvements. Keep hanging in there mama. Helmet time will be over before you know it!
