Breastfeeding

Baby hands

When my baby realizes I'm about to feed her she starts flailing her hands and bobbing her head. I have trouble getting her latched bc her hands are always in the way and I can't see what I'm doing. Someone's my DH has to hold her hands out of the way.
Once she's feeding she also pushes off of my breast with her hands and loses a good latch.

What do you do with babies hands while feeding?

Re: Baby hands

  • When he was really young, I swaddled for the more crazy arm times.

Now I have a nursing necklace he can hold or I hold his hands.

  • I also had my husband hold them at first! Then I got kind of good at squeezing his one arm under my free arm and positioning his other arm away from me. He figured it out though and now he is much calmer with his arms. He usually isn't crying anymore either when approaching my boob because I think he gets it that food is coming!
  • The lower arm goes under my arm and I grab the other arm with whichever hand I'm not using to position him on the breast. Then once he's latched I hold his hand. I'm going to get a necklace for him to grab though.
  • Ugh... this is my dd to a t. She doesnt seem to like her ear, shoulder, and hip to be parallel either which makes it extra difficult to get her to latch... good luck to you!

I did this! Eventually they learn to just to latch on and not flail so much. just have some patience and maybe a nursing necklace.

I secure one arm behind my back and I hold the other one.

  • I would recommend swaddling or trying to feed a little sooner. With DD1 I had this problem really bad. DD2 started doing it, and the LC suggested feeing her a little sooner so she wasn't so hungry and it worked really really well.
