First RE appointment

Our first RE appointment is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Will there definitely be some kind of internal exam?

I have been anxiously awaiting this appointment for a few weeks now and AF has arrived. I really do not want to reschedule; however, it is an hour and a half drive, one way, for us, so to go up twice for something that could be done in one visit would be silly I suppose. We are freshly TTC, so at this point there is no evidence or thought of potential issues as to me having any problems with infertility. C can also only go on Mondays, which limits the availability of the appointment.

I did call and ask the receptionist and she was anything but helpful.

Me: 30  DW (aka C): 29

Together since 2/15/11 ~ Legally married in NY on 9/29/12

***CP mentioned***

We've been working on baby #1 since July 2013 using Open ID donor sperm.  8 IUI attempts with 5 actual IUIs and one chemical pregnancy.  We have one fresh IVF cycle under our belts as well as a FET.  I have endometriosis and a uterine septum that was corrected via surgery in November 2013.

11/14/14 -  Second HSG shows that tubes are still clear and ute is looking good.

12/6/14 - Started BCPs in prep for IVF #2

12/22/14 - Saline u/s and endometrial scratch (All was clear and OUCH!)

1/2/15 - Began stimming for IVF #2

 ****All Welcome!****

We are Mommas to four fur babies - 3 dogs and 1 cat.

Re: First RE appointment

  • No, there will not necessarily be an internal exam.  My first RE appointment was just a consult.  We talked about my health history, our comfort level with intervention, and how the practice works.

That said, there will be certain tests they will want to run on you at some point; that typically includes CD3 blood work and may include a baseline (internal) ultrasound which is usually done during your period...so they may actually want to do that tomorrow to take advantage of the timing (otherwise they would have to wait another month or so).  In my experience, vag cams on your period are always a little awkward but the doctors are used to it and it really is no big deal.

    Good luck!

  • Agree with ball.and.chain. My first visit was more of a conversation, then CD 3 plans follicle count, bloodwork and since I knew I had a funky tube we scheduled an HSG. They did some blood work I think too. Otherwise we talked about options including IUI and IVF because my tubes were likely compromised. Good luck!

  • I had no problems aside from some age related, borderline low ovarian function, and In my 9-10 months of seeing my RE I never had an internal exam. I had lots of blood work and ultrasounds. My obgyn sent records, so that may be why.

  • My RE said they'd do an intravaginal ultrasound.  That can happen during your period from my understanding.  Good luck at your appointment!  I'm having my first one, too, on the 18th :) Very much looking forward to it and I'm hoping for some good answers to my questions.
