NEED HELP!! Picky eater

I also posted this on 12-24 month board...

My son refuses to eat!! He will be 2 on August 10. He eats a handful of things with no problem:

macaroni and cheese, goldfish crackers, applesauce and oatmeal, bananas, yogurt, kale and spinach squezzy pouches, any kind of cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and spinach quiche. Oh and cookies...no problem of course.

Other than that I can't get him to eat anything!! It drives me nuts. I made chicken/broccoli/cheese casserole for dinner tonight. He refused to eat it. I mean I sat there and fought with him for a half an hour over it. I finally just gave in and made him a sandwich.

I give him vitamins every day. He also drinks milk and V8 fusion juice really well...the V8 juice has lots of vitamins. I am just worried he isn't getting enough variety in his diet! Am I doing something wrong?

I am so frustrated...any advice would be wonderful!

Re: NEED HELP!! Picky eater

  • That's always been our situation, but we've decided not to fight it. He does get a nutritional balance, and variety beyond that is more a personal taste thing. This is often a temporarily picky age, so I figure we'll just wait it out and not risk longer run food issues (and ruin all my own meals) by forcing things. He gets something quick and certain -- not baby food -- and we move on.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't stress about it.  He'll eventually get what he needs (it's good that you're doing vitamins) and it's probably just a phase.  Kids go through a LOT of eating/food phases, my daughter sure has.  Between 2-4 was probably the worst.  She was sooooo fussy and picky, literally ate like 4 foods.

Now at 7, she'll eat almost every fruit.. and a LOT of different veggies, and she'll try tons of new foods. She's a great eater, for the most part.  A 300% turn around from toddlerhood years.

I don't really think you can force a 2 year old to eat, so I just went with the flow. Stressing didn't make her eat better or differently, so I let it slide.  She grew out of it :)

  • Maybe I dont have high expectations, but for a toddler, it sounds like he eats great.

  • I remember you from Aug 11..hi! My ds eats the same way. I've had some good luck with pizza and chicken nuggets...but again all kid food. I think its a phase with my son and probably the way most 2 year olds eat. I just started trying to offer what we eat in a way I think he'll like. If we have tacos..he gets his own meat and cheese wrap then I add sides I know he likes watermelon..etc.

  • Ella went through a crazy no eating phase that lasted a few months last summer. I was really freaked out, but she wasn't losing weight and she still had energy. The only advice I have is to keep offering different things along with the go-to's and eventually he will start to add a little more variety in to his diet.

You are not alone. I have a picky eater too.

Wheat pitas, soy cheese toast, oatmeal, teddy grahams, spaghetti, green beans, corn, chips, cresent roll pizzas, and cupcakes is what my kid will eat consistently. I have tried everything, but he won't budge. I just keep trying, and make sure I have food on hand that I know he will eat. Good Luck!
