Butting in--Progesterone shot

Hi everyone!

I hope you don't mind me asking a question here about progesterone shots.  I figured there will probably be ladies here who have had experience with them.

Long story short my daughter was born at 38 weeks and my son was born at 36w5d.  Since my son was technically a preemie (the biggest preemie ever @6lbs10oz lol), my ob wants to put me on progesterone shots starting at 19 weeks.

If you have had this experience before, can you please share it with me?  Also, does it seem strange to consider my son a preemie and to take these precautions?  I just never thought of him as a preemie before, so I was kind of surprised at my ob's suggestion for the shot.

I am on P17. It's NBD except I get a "hangover" from them the following morning. Just a headache. Anything before 37 weeks is considered premature. Some 36 weekers need more than others so I think the safest plan is to get you to and past 37. GL!

  • My opinion with stuff like progesterone is better safe than sorry.  I've been on it since 17 weeks and other than some soreness at the injection site I haven't had any side effects at all that I'm aware of.

  • Thanks ladies.  At what point did you/are you going to stop taking the shot?  It can't be all the way up to 40 weeks, right?

  • Ive been on suppositories and i recently switched to the shots. My doctor here at the hospital said, should i go to term, he'll administer them through week 37. The reasoning is that at 37 weeks, the baby would no longer be a preemie. If you go off of progesterone too soon, your body can experience withdrawls and this puts you at risk to deliver early.

  • My first son was born at 34 weeks, 3 days.  I took weekly progesterone shots with my second son from 16-36 weeks and he was born at 39 weeks, 6 days.  It definitely seemed to help, with no side effects for me.

  • I had them from 16 weeks until 36 weeks this time, and other than a occasional injection site reaction, they were fine. In my case, they worked too well, I am over 39 weeks and my damn body refuses to go into labor, lol!

Haha!  See that's what I am afraid of!  I just have never considered my son to be a preemie and I am terrified of having to be induced and maybe have a C-section as a result :/  But I know it's better than pre-term labor.  Good luck to you!  I hope your baby comes soon!

  • My first pregnancy ended with DS being born at 26 weeks. So for DD, I took P17 shots from weeks 16-36. I was given the choice of waiting until 41 weeks to see if she would come on her own or getting induced. Because I had GD, I didn't feel comfortable waiting until week 41 so I was induced at 39w4d. They broke my water, gave me Pitocin and I was dilated all the way, but she wouldn't come after an hour pf pushing. OB said that there was a strong possibility of her being too big and she might go into distress if I tried for a vaginal delivery so I had a CS. Not ideal for me at all, but after having such an early preemie, I was just glad that she was full term and healthy. I didn't really have side effects except for some itchiness on the injection site.

A friend of mine had a 35 and a 37 weeker. She was also given a choice of P17 shots for her 3rd pregnancy and decided not to. She gave birth at 34 weeks and he stayed in the NICU for a week. I think when it comes to preterm labor, better safe than sorry.

  • Thanks again for your responses everyone.  Of course, I will take the shots if that's what my doctor suggests, I was just taken off guard by her suggestion of it since no one has ever referred to my son as a preemie before.  I mean he wasn't in the NICU at all, came home with us, his pedi never referred to him as a preemie.  Nothing.  It is actually causing me to worry a lot now about pre-term later so of course I am going to do whatever I can to prevent that.  I just don't want to end up with the opposite problem either!
