Holy heart attack!

We are at my mom's house for a little family party this weekend. Tonight DH and I put O to bed around 7:30 in his pack n play upstairs in a spare bedroom. We took the video monitor outside to hang out with family and light off some fireworks.

About 8pm we see the monitor and O is crying. We were content to let him cry because he was super tired and we knew he'd fall asleep soon. 10 mins later, DH looks at the monitor and says to me "he's not in there!!! Wtf?! Where is he!" So I look and I say "oh he's right there!" But on closer inspection, "he" was a blanket.

So DH and I tear off racing into the house. As we run up the steps, I hear my stepdad's little brother [he's 25] say "I got him" and come walking from the back of the house with Oliver! What the eff?!

Oliver sees us and just loses his ever loving mind. He's never met my stepuncle, and neither had DH before today. So DH is livid and Oliver is terrified.

I calmed Oliver down and then I calmed DH down. He kept saying "who just gets someone's baby out of their room like that?!?" And he's right. Who does that?!?

So. Needless to say, I was about 5 seconds from flatlining when I saw that empty bed in the monitor. I know SU meant well, but holyshit, man!!

  • I would have been freaking out if I didn't see J on a video monitor. I know your SU thought he was helping you out, but probably should've asked you first.

  • Man, that should be a common sense rule.  You don't pick up other people's kids without asking.

Right? Especially when they are in bed because they are already emotionally charged. They don't need to be terrified by some stranger and he doesn't know your rules.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

I think this is a rule that is only common sense to parents, honestly.  If you don't have kids (or at least lots of experience with them), you really don't know the importance of schedules, familiarity, parental "territory" and that kind of thing.

    That would be scary though!

That's exactly what DH said. And SU has two kids of his own, so not sure why he thought that was a good idea.

In that case, he probably thought "oh let me see if I can just comfort him real quick, we are all family."

It wasn't a good move, but it doesn't seem like he was doing anything with malice. I'd just tell him you are sleep training and let it go tbh.

Yeah, we didn't say anything to him. I said "thanks for looking out!" and left it at that. I think the panic made DH mad, but once he calmed down and we knew O was fine, he was okay. It was so odd, but he had the best intentions.

  • Honestly, I think the majority of my family members might have done this.  I had to almost hold my mother back one day when I put DS down for a nap and he cried....for a whole 45 seconds!  He probably thought he was giving you a break, lol

  • I know exactly how you feel.  My BIL did that to me once when DS was still teeny and sleeping in his swing.  I heard a little peep from DS and when I looked at the monitor the swing was empty, but still on!  I flipped out- turns out BIL for some unknown reason woke up at 6am, heard DS make a little noise and assumed he needed a diaper change.

BIL has no kids and still acts like a kid himself most of the time.  He was the LAST person I expected to get DS out of the swing and change his diaper.  I nearly died that day. LOL

OMG. It was scary, but in the very beginning I totally would have fainted!! Your BIL is sweet but holy crap I would have freaked out with my lack of sleep and psycho hormones. Lol
