I know it's still early to be buying things, but my MIL is very excited for her first grandchild! She asked me to give her a list of things we want/need so that she can start buying us gifts and give suggestions to others who might ask her what we need (for the record - I told her she doesn't have to get us anything and not to spend much money, but she was adamant she wants a list!)
So my question - what are some things that you might not have thought of getting/asking for but that turned out to be very helpful once the baby came? Smaller and bigger items - she said some family members may want to all go in together so she wants some bigger items on the list as well.

A few off the top of my head...
Rock-N-Play
Angelcare Movement Monitor
JJ Cole Diaper Caddy
Boppy
FP Jumperoo
FP My Little Lamb Swing
Carter Robert 7.18.08 | Brynn Sophia 5.24.10 | Reid Joseph 9.10.12 | Emerson Mae 1.27.14
All of these. I also loved the FP spacesaver highchair. We didn't register for a bouncy and I ended up buying a cheap one that vibrated. If I had to do it over again I would have got one of the really plush ones that vibrated and had a good toy arc over it. I am also a fan of the Halo Swaddle mes and the sleep sacks for when you are done swaddling.
Oh and Dwell Studio hooded towels. They are fairly expensive, however they are great quality and they hold up really well. DS still uses them after bath. We also love the aden & anais Issies. DS has used them as his lovey since 6 months old. He still uses them and they are easy to replace once they get too worn out. Last but not least, the aden & anais Dream blankets. They are ridiculously soft and get better after each wash. Once we started using blankets after he turned a year old he preferred the Dream blanket over all others.
we had to run out to get more of these on our first day home too. We only had one and DD immediately spit up on it haha.
aden and anias swaddle blankets. We have seriously used these things every single day since even before we left the hospital and they are now his special blankies. Great for swaddling early on and can be used a million different ways.
also, we got some fleece sleep sacks that just zipped up and those were great for middle of the night diaper changes. hate the sleepers with a million snaps on them!!!
We didn't have very many nb clothes. That would have been helpful since we had a peanut. Even if you leave tags on and return if you have a bigger baby. My DH had to run out and buy nb clothes.
Everyone made great suggestions! Don't forget a few bed sheets, burp cloths (never had enough), and receiving blankets (which I still use), pnp, cart/high chair cover (used a lot after he could sit up and I still use).
Bouncer and jumper. Both are so helpful to be able to get stuff done when baby is being needy. I am a minimalist so it took me a while to get them, but both times after I bought it I wish I had got it sooner.
I'm finding a lot of stuff that I didn't get originally I end up buying anyway eventually. I'm dying to get a crib and baby monitor. But these are all things normal people get from the start I think. I just hate buying stuff and was trying to avoid anything unnecessary.
Oh one thing I cannot live without is my Beco (gemini) baby carrier, but any soft baby carrier will do. I take it everywhere and use it less now that DS is older, but it got almost daily use his first 6 months.
Also wearable blankets and swaddling blankets are awesome!
My daughter was a breeze and the only thing I can remember being really great with her was Dr. Browns bottles they really helped with her reflux.
