Trying to Get Pregnant

Tramadol

Hello all! Not a big post person but had a question and was wondering if anyone could help. I take tramadol for pain with my endometriosis and I was wondering if its ok to take while I'm going through my 2ww? I called my doctors office last week before the holidays and haven't heard back.
Just getting over a cp last cycle so kinda nervous on anything I take but it helps with all my cramping. Just wanted to see if I could get any input. Google is scary.

I'd call and ask your pharmacist if it has any known effects on implantation/trying to conceive.

I second this! Just call wherever your prescription was filled. Though I have found you can generally just call any pharmacist and they'll answer to the best of their knowledge.

  • I sometimes take it sparingly during my 2ww for my endo. My RE suggested only taking it after Tylenol and resting failed (which is pretty much all the time) but I've never been pregnant. When/if I get my BFP I will stop taking it altogether.

Me: Endo, PCOS, septated uterus (mostly removed)

    DH: perfect

    Started TTC in June 2011

  • Tramadol DOES cross the placenta, so I wouldn't recommend taking it while you're pregnant, but during the 2ww should be fine. I would try to find an alternative agent that works though, because some of the post-marketing studies on Tramadol in pregnancy show some nasty adverse effects to the baby (including but not limited to stillbirth).

I will say, I also have endometriosis and didn't have any need for pain meds while pregnant with my kiddos, so hopefully you wouldn't need it while pregnant anyway.

From your friendly, neighborhood pharmacist :)

I have a question. What about Flexeral or Naproxen? I threw my back out and have Flexeral, Naproxen and Vicodin from the last time it happened. I am in the 2 ww. I am not taking Vicodin but did take one of each of the others. Trying not too since I don't want to be on anything. Not sure how these work?
    Thanks.

I'm not a pharmacist, but I'm currently taking flexeril for pain. I'm pretty sure it's a pregnancy class B, but you should check, because I switched from a C or D class prior to TTC on the advice of my doctor.

I was on Tramadol/Ultram, Norco, and muscle relaxers long term and always took them during my TWW, with a nod of approval from my RE. I would not advise taking it once you get a bfp.
I knew I really, really liked you! Sounds like my list of medications for my degenerative disks in my back and bone spurs in my hips. FWIW I took norcos throughout the entirety of all 3 pregnancies and just made certain to taper down to the lowest dose possible around 33 weeks and to stop taking them completely around 36 weeks. All babies were fine! I worked with a pain specialist, my OB and Perinatologist to make sure we were all on the same page and doing the safest thing possible while still managing my pain. The biggest concern with taking strong pain medication through the duration of a pregnancy is the chance of having the baby suffer from withdrawls once born, but by safely tapering down that can be avoided. Of course all doctors are different and will have different views but I was so glad to have the support I needed from mine to help manage my pain that only got worse as my pregnancies progressed. Chronic pain is a biitch and I feel for anyone that suffers from it!

Thanks going to the Dr today. I can't get out of bed my back is so bad. I ended up having to take a Vicodin at 3:45am this morning so I could at least get up. Will be asking the Dr what I can take while TTC. Thanks!!

  • Good to know. I specifically request tramadol at doctor's offices and dentist's for pain instead of vic's or oxy's due to alcohol/pill addiction. Five years sober, but still...
