Sleeping face down

The past couple of days dd has been rolling both ways really well so I think it is alright to let her sleep on her stomach. However, she sometimes puts her face straight down facing the mattress. This makes me nervous and I end up trying to move her head to the side or rolling her over. I would like to think if she can't breathe she would move but I don't know.. It still makes me too nervous to let her stay that way. Anyone elses LO doing this?

Re: Sleeping face down

  • My daughter started doing this awhile back. She freaked me out as well but now this is the only way she sleeps on her stomach , she rolls over to this position . They do move their face to the side, just make sure there isn't anything around them that can move into their face.

This. It is so nerve wracking but you will get used to it and learn to trust them.

  • It worried be at the start as well, and DS was only 4 months when he started rolling on his tummy to sleep.  I didn't sleep well for 2 weeks as I was so scared he'd suffocate (he slept very well OTOH)!  At 6 months +, you really don't need to worry... their head and neck are strong enough to move if they have trouble breathing.

  • Lucas started doing this in the past few weeks, and I hate it! But, everyone tells me it's fine.

I catch DS doing this sometimes too. It is scary but as long as they can control their head movements and there isn't anything to keep them from doing so, it's ok.

  • Thanks everyone for the responses. I notice if I let her stay face down she moves her head eventually. I just was not letting her stay long enough cause it made me too nervous. I think I'll sleep easier now knowing that she does move herself.

  • My LO buries her face in mattress and it freaks me out! I've tried to move her head but she moves it right back.

DS loves to be faceplanted in a piece of fabric to sleep. When he covers his whole face with his lovey, I try to move it once he's out, but other than that I do my best to leave him alone and trust that he'll move if he needs to.

  • DD1 used to do this. It didn't last very long but it did freak me out a bit. As long as they can move their head it isn't something to worry about.
