One & Done: Only child

How was everyone's holiday?

Ours was good. DH and I took DS to the fireworks, which also had food vendors and inflatables there. My sister and my 2 year old nephew also came in from out of town and went with us. Great time!!!

It was great until around 8pm last night when DD completely lost her mind from being overtired. So we missed fireworks, but I didn't really expect her to stay up that late anyway.

  • Wednesday evening, we hit some good sales at the mall ... starting to buy some things for our trip (it's only when you are making packing lists for a 16 day vacation that you realize how very few clothes you actually have since you do laundry every day otherwise). Got some great deals, and a splurge on two awesome pairs of shoes for DD which were quite expensive.

Yesterday, we went to my parents' house where my dad and brother grilled food enough for an army! My mom is in FL visiting a friend, so she was missed.

I'm at work today, and DH is home with DD. They went shopping for all the food we need for a BBQ we're having at our house tomorrow afternoon :)

BBQ at our house tomorrow, and then hopefully an uneventful, lazy Sunday with just the 3 of us. :)

  • I worked til 11 which was terribly boring and chewed out DH for letting LO have freaking french fries for dinner with nothing else. I was also peeved that LO was up late enough to watch the fireworks and he didnt even try to show him.

    So bah humbug

  • It was our year to do the walk-in clinic cliche. Just an ear infection. Early in the morning, so the rest of the day was DVDs. DH always works the 4th anyway (his station broadcasts the local parade), so nothing significant was upended. The fireworks don't start until 10:45 here, so that hadn't been an option.

  • It was okay. The kiddo came down with strep on Wednesday so he was still feeling not so hot from that. We mostly chilled in the house all day until dinner time when we grabbed some sandwiches and fruit from Whole Foods and went on a little hike. We watched fireworks later but he was unimpressed. He had a lot of fun throwing pop its, though.

  • Our (long) weekend was good, but nothing exceptional.

Since we live in Germany, celebrations are different.  The military had a festival on post, but the weather was not cooperative, and, my LO attends a local kindergarten, which follows the German holiday calendar, so we opted to stay home.  Last week was a normal week for Germans, plus it was "Forest Week"  for DS's kindergarten group (the teachers take the group, 20 children ranging in age for three to seven years old, on the municipal bus to a local forest for several hours each morning).

But, considering my DH was in Afghanistan last year for the Fourth of July, we are thankful to have him home (plus, my in-laws are visiting us for four weeks).  By no means am I complaining!  :)

  • We went up north with family for the weekend and it was fabulous. We all go about 4 or 5 times a year, and this time was the most fun I've had there recently.

My DD got to play with her cousins, we saw fireworks, had bonfires, went fishing, swimming, BBQing, hiking, etc. Perfect up north weekend.

The trip home, however, was awful. A drive that normally takes 3.5 hours took almost 6. So frustrating! I'm very glad to be home.
