I'm kinda scared. post preg. symptoms

What a rough 2 weeks it's been! It all started after my epidural was placed...twice! It took the pain of my contractions but i felt the pain of my baby come out. No big deal. That night i started having a severe headache. Low and behold i had an epidural headache. I followed the advice from a few doctors that the headache will go away. My ob called me to check on me and i told her that i can't even lift my head off my pillow. I couldn't even hold my baby!! She told me to go in and have the blood patch done. I couldn't wait to end this suffering!! I was ready to feel normal..get back to life and start enjoying my new baby. I get checked into the hospital and had to wait for 36 hours to get my blood patch because the anastesiologist who was on call refused to touch me because she wasn't the one who placed my epidural and she felt like it was just a headache!! I lay in bed suffering...on my back watching my dh rock and care for my baby. I cried because it was a full week if pain and torture and i only saw my lo when he had to be nursed. Finally i get my blood patch done and it took some time...but the pain and pressure in my head went away. I was discharged a day later..very sore in my back but better then that headache. I get home and two days later...I'm back in the hospital. I thought i suffered a stroke!! My mom and dh are freaking out!! I got up that morning and started to change lo. I couldn't hold on to anything. I put lo down and told my dh my arm and hands were numb. Then my leg went numb and dh had to catch me and carry me to the couch. Then the side of my face went numb. My face started to droop..i was drooling and sluring my words. I can't form sentences either. I'm rushed to the hospital. Given a ct scan and two mri's. Hooked up to ekg monitors. Everything checked out fine! They were going to release me then i had another episode in front of them....they knew it wasn't normal so they kept me. Noone seems to know what's going on. I go see a neurologist soon. They know it's not life threatening...and they think it has something with migraines. Even though I'm not feeling a migraine...just slight headaches on the left side of my head. They sent me home. I started doing research. Came across the aura migraines. It describes my symptoms to a T! When i start to have an episode I can't function. I feel like I'm out of my own body. It's seriously like I'm having a stroke!! I'm pretty scared. I feel like i haven't be able to really enjoy my new baby. I cry almost daily because i would give anything to feel normal. I'm now in constant worry when my next episode will start. I don't even want to leave my house because it's embarrasing if the episode comes while im I'm public. Does anyone know anyone who's gone through this?? Think it could be a hormone thing and it might go away? Just looking for advice before seeing my neurologist. Not sure if i actual have these specific migraines...but strange that i have those symptoms. Gah. I'd give anything to feel normal again. Sorry. On mobile. Lots of errors.

  • I'm sorry your going through this. Hope it goes away soon. Take it easy. If your DH or mom can go with you on the porch, patio short distances from home do so.
  • That's really awful! I'm sorry. I would hope they'll do a MRI as well.
  • I'm sorry that this is happening. What you described with your face going numb reminds me of my mom after she had one of us kids. They called it Bell's Palsy, I think. Half of her face went numb, like people who have strokes do. I don't know anything else about it other than I believe it went away on its own for her.
I hope your doctors can figure out what's going on and get you healed so you can enjoy your new baby.

This. I had Bell's Palsy with DS. However the numbness should only be in your face and one side. And the drooping and inability to use your face muscles would last for weeks. Have your symptoms remained steady or does the tingling and numbness in your face come and go?

My numbness starts with my arm. Then my arm goes heavy. Then it affects my hand. My hand and fingers move on their own. It then spreads to my leg..then affects my face. It only affects my right side. My tongue gets numb and my mouth starts to droop. I can't talk well because my tongue is numb. it's hard for me to make the connection of what i want to say...and to say it. Almost as if i forgot how to speak. The episode only last 15 to 30 minutes. I then return to normal...but very tired after the episodes.

It sounds like you could possibly be having a seizure.  My mom has a seizure disorder, and while she hasn't had one in years, her symptoms were similar.

Idk about that. the doctors have ruled anything like that out. they said I wasn't having seizures, or strokes. Everything came back great on all my tests that were ran. Even though they have ruled certain things out, they can't pin point what it is, hence why I am now having to see a neurologist. However; I think it is linked to migraines, as two different hospitals (that I was treated at) all the doctors say they think it has something to do with migraines. I have heard of woman getting migraines after pregnancy because of all the hormone changes in your body, and I am thinking this might be linked to that.

ugh! I can't wait to go see this neurologist. I am dying to know what the fluck is wrong with me!

  • Sorry to hear you are having a rough time. It would be hard to not take care of your new baby after all this time getting ready for their arrival. Hang in there and hopefully you will get this figured out.
  • I'm so sorry, that would be really scary to lose control over your body. Hoping they can figure things out and do something for you. Hang in there!

I get migraines with an aura, numbness and tingling in my face and the inability to speak. They present just like a stroke. I had them frequently with this pregnancy; they were related to hormones. I have seen a neurologist and I get MRIs every 510 years. I've had these migraines since the age of 12. They are awful. I hope you can get some relief.

Ok, I did a quick Google search because I have migraines with aura and was kind of thinking, WTF, because "stroke symptoms" have never come up. It's generally some flashy lights, dizziness, maybe a change in vision... I take my migraine medication, then I go lie down for a couple hours.

Looks like what they think you have is called a hemiplegic migraine and the treatment seems much different than what they would give other people with aura migraines, so unfortunately I'm not much help!

yes!! hemiplegic migraines, however; I was under the impression is was the same thing as the aura migraines. Maybe I am wrong, but yes the hemiplegic migraines are what I am referring to.

yes, they are awful, however (knock on wood here) I have yet to experience "migraine pain" when I am experiencing, or right after I experience the episode. I do however; have a slight headache on my left side, by my temple. The Dr. said this can be normal to not feel the pain of the migraine, but experience the "stroke like symptoms" caused by the migraine itself. I really hope this is temporary, and I hope if this is what I have I hope it's all linked to hormones and goes the f.uck away!! I have never experienced this before, until abut 5 days ago. I had 5 episodes of this on Tuesday. Then one on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

So sorry you are going through this. I hope you get answers soon.
  • I had an episode while I was pregnant with my DD. I woke up from a nap, my right arm and hand were numb. I couldn't read what was on the TV and I was not talking clearly. I couldn't even get my mind to function. I was telling my DH to get my toothbrush and I couldn't even formulate the word. I was diagnosed with a TIA. However, the neurologist I saw with this pregnancy said it was probably a migraine. I occasionally get the aurora ones, and they all tend to run in my family. I had horrible headaches for a week or two after my DS was born. They have finally mostly gone away. Hope you get better soon! I know it can be very scary.

So scary!! I was terrified for the first day or so. I had no idea what was going on! Since then, I have calmed down some...and I really don't go anywhere, and when I do my mom and DH go with me. I can't imagine going through this when left alone with my kids. I mean...my 13 and 6 year old are easy and would understand, but I can't even pick up my baby, or change his diaper or anything!! I really do need help when I am going through an episode. My mom is only here for two more weeks, and DH goes back to work tomorrow! I hope I see a neurologist soon, so he can get me some meds and make this all go away!!

It's very comforting to know that I am not crazy, and some of you woman know what I am talking about when I describe my symptoms as you've been there, or been in a similar situation, and it's actually nice to know that I am not the only one dealing with this! I for sure thought no one would know what I was talking about. It gives me hope that this will taper off, and I can go on with my life and start to really enjoy my baby! I feel so robbed these last 2 weeks, with dealing with one thing, to another, and spending more time admitted into the hospital, then actually at home enjoying time with my LO.

It looks like hemiplegic is a type of aura migraine. So all hemiplegic migraines are considered migraines with aura but not all aura migraines are hemiplegic :).

I take typical medications (eletriptan) for my aura migraines but apparently these types are not recommended for hemiplegic migraines. They may want to put you on anticonvulsants or even calcium channel blockers.

Just my random 2 cents on this, but if they do put you on anti-seizure meds watch out for the side effects.  I was put on Topamax for my migraines, and it felt worse than the migraine itself.

I'm so sorry this came on how and when it did.  Hopefully the neurologist can get to the bottom of it asap so you can get some relief.  Thinking of you.
