Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Milestones

My son is 8 months old as of yesterday. I am concerned about milestones, but my husband is not, so I am looking to you ladies to find out if I'm just crazy or not. :)

My son does not crawl yet and cannot roll from back to front. He has however been rolling from front to back for a long time. My husband thinks he just likes being on his back so he can eat his toes and doesn't want to roll to his tummy.

He babbles A LOT. He like his mother is a talker!

He sits unassisted, but does not get into the seated position by himself. I put a pillow behind him because Mommy is scared he'll fall back on bang his head, but he's only done that once. He can butt scoot a bit. He gets what he needs slowly but surely with butt scooting.

On his tummy he can spin in circles and shimmys around to get toys he's interested in. He can lift his whole upper body off the floor, but does not put his legs under his tummy.

Last but not least he can stand assisted. He LOVES to stand. He cannot get there by himself, but can stand for a really long time while I'm holding him.

Do you think he's hitting enough milestones where I don't have to be concerned with him not rolling back to front?

Sorry for the long post. I'm just a concerned, stressed, FTM.

Re: Milestones

  • Remember all babies are different and will hit milestones at different times. DS just started rolling around with ease and still needs a lot of help sitting. But his doctor says he is right on track. They do it when they are ready. If your doctor isn't concerned you shouldn't be either.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

My DS is younger, so I'm not speaking from more experience or anything, but I think your DS is doing just fine. I asked the pedi about rolling because DS still isn't rolling, but is sitting unassisted and she said to not worry about rolling anymore next will come crawling. She said that can look like anything: army crawl, hands and knees, or even butt scooting. Sounds like your LO is already doing his version of crawling. I wouldn't worry, your DS is doing just fine and will get to everything in his own time.

  • Sounds like your LO is doing fine. If your pedi isn't concerned then you shouldn't be either as it doesn't sound like he's lacking in mobility.

  • My LO is almost 8 months. He sits unassisted but just recently, like in the last few weeks. He can't get onto sitting position. He does roll both ways really well. Doesn't really have too much of interest in standing or pulling himself up. He doesn't scoot or crawl either.

Like other posters have said, if your pedi isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either. Every baby develops at his or her own pace.

This. My LO is 7.5 months and recently started getting into a seated position. He doesn't crawl but tries to . Each baby is SO different.

I agree with pp--every baby is different, and it doesn't sound like he's lacking muscle tone or grossly behind in all motor skills. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Wow!  I wouldn't be worried. My LO is a week from 8 months.  She rolls all over and can sit and stand with assistance, but can't get there by herself.  She gets on her tummy but rarely gets passed her elbows, usually she does the fish (arms back behind her), no spinning nada.  She doesn't babble, but groans a lot.

Sounds like your little one just likes to hang out.  :)

  • Thanks! I wish I wasn't so paranoid. :) My pediatrician always says he's perfect.

    Yup. Sounds fine by me!

If I were you, I would go with what the pedi tells you, if you like your pedi at least. You'll save yourself a lot of worry! I know babies that are younger than DS who are crawling, talking, standing, and almost walking. DS has no desire to be mobile yet, and can get to a sitting position from laying down, which I feel is find for almost 8 months. Babies grow in their own time!

  • As many have said all babies are different. A family friend's second son did not roll over either way let alone crawl or anything else until he was around 14 months but he is now 3 almost 4 and he is extremely intelligent and very well adjusted. So don't worry yourself too much.

You have described my son EXACTLY....At 8 month appt, pedi told me not to worry. The back to belly thing was likely bc he is on bigger side with slightly large head! Lol! She told me LOTS of tummy time. Within 2 or 3 days he was rolling all over both ways.  Now he also tips himself over onto his belly from sitting position. Still can't pull himself into a sit on his own, but close. It seems like it all almost happened overnight.

  • He's perfectly fine! Babies do things when THEY are ready. That's why the milestones are such a huge range of months. With my boys (they are 4.5 now), they were later doing almost everything and I always worried. My pedi kept telling me, "they wont crawl into kindergarten, they'll walk...relax. They won't not be able to sit when they're 2...relax" etc. With my girls (who are 6 months now), I don't even look at milestones. They're happy, healthy, and do things when they want to!
