My DS (4) is currently in swimming lessons and will NOT go under water and blow out through his nose. Any suggestions on how to help him? He can do it above water okish, but seems to just hate water in his face.
Is he able to blow bubbles with his mouth in the water? If not I would start with that by teaching him to blow bubbles like when you do with the stick. If he can already do that then I would suggest googles and explain to him that blowing bubbles out of your nose is like blowing your nose in a tissue. That used to work when I taught swim lessons to little ones.
My daughter (3) is similar. But she doesn't even like the back of her head getting wet. She wants her head/hair to stay dry.
I'm not going to push it. She'll handle it when she handles it, and we will slow down on the swim lessons as needed until she can manage to not completely freak out, which is what she does now.
I think you just have to wait until they're ready. Googles might help. DD1 started swimming lessons at 3 and wouldn't put her face in the water until she was 5. Sometime around 6 she got comfortable with it and will now dive for rings underwater.

DS is the same way. I signed him up for parent/child swim lessons (he is just under the age cut-off) to see if being with me in the water helps. I know I can't push him to do it until he is ready. Reading the others' replies makes me feel better! I am just happy he gets in the water this summer; last summer, he wouldn't go near a pool.
You just have to let him do it on his own. DD wouldn't do it forever. I started taking her to the pool every day on vacation and now she will.
