Newborn: Mei Tai, Moby, or Ring sling

I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but I went back a few pages and didn't see the same question.

What would you recommend for a newborn/infant carrier? I'm between the mei tai (probably Babyhawk brand), moby, and ring sling. I'm not really concerned about the longevity beyond infant use, because we plan to go to a Boba 3g when she's older (or a Beco Gemini... just can't decide!)

It would probably mostly be used around the house, if that makes any difference. Thank you for any advice you can offer!

Re: Newborn: Mei Tai, Moby, or Ring sling

  • I still use my Moby around the house, even though it's too hot to use outside. I love how soft and snuggly it is. Lately because DS is so heavy (nearly 20 lbs), I wrap him up in the Moby to bounce and rock him to sleep. I've never used a ring sling, though, to be fair.

  • My DD was early and is tiny, and a ring sling is the only thing she fits in! So that's something to bear in mind if you want a carrier just for the infant stage.

  • I love ring slings for the newborn stage. :)

I have all three and I vote for the mei tai.  The ring sling is hard to adjust to prevent "wobble head," and the Moby stretches/sags so that even if you get a nice tight wrap, "wobble head" happens anyway.  Plus, it's HOT (I know you'll mostly be using it inside, but still...)

I have the Baby Hawk and I love it.  It has a panel to support baby's head so it is actually hands free.  I guess second vote would be the ring sling.  I like ours, but I think I'll like it more when she has better head control.  It may also be that I didn't devote enough time to practicing and learning how to properly position her in it- I feel like I did, but who knows.

I rolled a baby washcloth in the sling behind LOs neck (suggested in instructions) and it gave really good support. Legs in position in the moby the head is supported by a side panel of fabric. Once you go legs out in the moby they can hold their head better, but you need to support with a hand if making large movements. I preferred the moby around the house because it fully supports the weight. I used the ring sling outside the house because it was easy, but after a few hours I could feel it in my shoulder (though I did last 10h at an airport wearing her most of that time).

  • I didn't like wrapping, but I loved me mei tai and used it from the beginning. This time I have a ring sling too. Personally, the moby is just too much fabric and too hard to use out of the house. I don't want to have to start at home to wear my baby.

Agree with all.  I love my ring sling for quick runs into the store, but didn't like it until he had good head control.  The mai tai is awesome all around for everything and every age.

  • I used my RS and MT pretty equally with my 1 year old when he was a squish. The perk of a MT is being able to do a high back carry with a little one.
