Babies: 6 - 9 Months

First finger foods

My DD has been rejecting the spoon.  I'm starting to think I should try just giving her finger foods. If you took this approach, what were the first few foods you started with? Also when(if) did you start giving them those "puffs"? Just looking for ideas-thanks!

Re: First finger foods

  • We followed BLW-style after DS refused to be spoon-fed. We did roasted sweet potato wedges, roasted butternut squash, pan-fried firm tofu, pasta (rotini).

for breakfast, we did fruits, so mango strips, peach slices, kiwi slices, banana (halved lengthwise).

i bought a canister of puffs when DS was 7 months?  We still have 1/2 a canister left a month later.  They have little nutritional value, and I find that freeze-dried fruits (from trader joes) work just as well.

  • We started with Baby Led Weaning from the getgo. His first meal was beef, broccoli, and green beans. Everything is in couple inch long slices.
In the morning for breakfast it is usually slices of fruit, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and or yogurt. Dinner he gets whatever we are having.

  • Oh, and we started puffs a little after 7 months. They are great to have in a restaurant while we wait for our food.

  • LOs first meal was spears of baked potato and thick strips of steak. Her favourite food is slightly overcooked broccoli. Even when she's eaten all the florets she keeps sucking and chewing on the stalk piece. Banana was also a big hit. We give her whatever we're having, or soft fruit if its not baby friendly (like tossed salad or ice cream).

  • We don't do puffs either.  Actually the only "baby food" we've purchased are Plum Organics Fiddlesticks.  I wanted to find something I could easily carry in the airport at the end of the month, and make sure she liked them first (loves the apple/carrot kind).

Her first foods were broccoli and a strip of hamburger cut from my own burger.  She eats whatever we eat, unless we have something relatively unhealthy/with lots of sodium (i.e., frozen pizza) - then we give her some fruit or veggies.

  • I just started giving DS2 puffs and he just turned 8 months. He's doing very well with picking them up, taking it to his mouth and chewing. I haven't tried anything else yet.

  • I got some puffs when DD turned 6 months old but I think it was too early. She wasn't into them. Now, a month later, she likes them a little but I imagine the container I have will get totally stale before I even make a dent in it.

DS has had avocado, mango slices, tomato slices, broccoli florets, salad greens, a piece of bread, raspberries, honeydew, zucchini and a slice of lime.

I'm not currently planning on introducing puffs during his infancy. We'll see how it goes, but I'd rather he snack on fruits and veggies than on something from a bag.
