Birthday Parties

non junky party favors?

DS1 (turning 7) is having his first "friend" party this year. He is having a bounce house party at a local party place. He wants a dinosaur party. Most of his guests are his age but three of them are in 3rd/ 4th grade and one of the kids is 4. There will be just any many girls as boys so I don't want to pick a favor that the girls wont like. I'd prefer to get them one nicer item than a bunch of junk but I'd like to keep things under $5 each. Edible things are ok but have to be allergy safe which can be hard. Any ideas?

  • Coloring book + washable markers or color pencils

Not crappy water gun (since summer is getting close)

Water bottle (they have some dinosaur themed ones at party city for 2$)

  • I got some fun plastic cups from Walmart in the party section that had different character--Disney-Mickey, Minnie, Cars and Hello Kitty, etc, and I let the kids choose the cup they wanted.  For me, a plastic cup is just a good thing as a mom, and it is fun for the kid.

I wish I would have gotten like some bubbles to add from Gymboree or someplace else.  But bubbles would have been fun.

For DD's party we got the kids bubbles, paddle ball game (DD wanted her friends to have something to play with) and a couple of small chocolate bars (halloween size).  Nothing too exciting but I didn't have much to spend.
  • I'm doing a few Mickey shaped sugar cookies but I know none of the kids have food allergies.

  • How much do you usually spend per kid?

I'd get a $5 gift card per kid to an ice cream place or the like.

  • For my sons last party I bought each child a book.  They loved it and I prefer that over something that is just going to get thrown away after awhile.

  • I like doing bubbles. They're inexpensive, useful & all kids love them. You can never have too much bubbles. For my son's 2nd bday I bought packs of 4 at Dollar tree, peeled the lables off & put Mickey Mouse stickers on them I'd bought at walmart. It looked like I'd bought Mickey bubbles but mine were much cheaper! I also usually get enough balloons for each kid to take one home. They aren't useful but my kids love them.
