LO's first birthday party is coming up! We are having a small family party, and I plan to make the food. LO has several food intolerances and can't have dairy, eggs, nuts, or any legumes. I am breastfeeding so I can't eat any of those things either. For a cake I am leaning toward making one of those watermelon "cakes" that is really just a watermelon carved in the shape of a cake with some other fruits. Do you think it would be a huge disappointment for people not to have a regular cake? Would it be horrible if the menu only included foods that LO and I can also eat (probably grilled chicken, potato salad with vinegar and/or olive oil, grilled vegetables, green salad)?
Re: Food intolerances and menu
I'd make food that you can eat, those options you listed are actually pretty nice
Anyhow I'd have a regular cake for everyone else and a special "safe" cupcake or treat for your LO (and yourself)
I think your menu sounds fine. It's not like you're only serving nuts and seeds - there is plenty of food choices. And while cake is typically birthday party fare, it seems unfair to serve something the guest of honor can't enjoy. I think a watermelon "cake" sounds lovely for a summer party.
I'm assuming you're thinking of something like this:
This. Do you have a vegan bakery nearby or a place that will make something vegan? A friend's DS has severe allergies, so she got an egg-free, dairy-free cake for his first bday. Everyone else ate regular cake.

The OP could probably easily find a vegan cake AND I would think that any of her guests - close friends and family or not - wouldn't really even give it a 2nd thought.

Your menu sounds fine, but I would serve a regular cake and have something for you and LO to have.
I have allergies but I always serve things for my guests and then don't eat what I can't eat.
If there will be other kids there over the page of about 2 I'd have a cake or cupcakes. My almost 5 year old would be extremely disappointed if we went to a birthday party & there was no cake. We generally save sweets for special occasions so that's probably his favorite part of birthday parties.
I made dairy free cupcakes for my younger son's 1st birthday due to an intolerance. I'm sure you can find dairy & egg free recipes online or like others mentioned, look into a vegan bakery. If the cost was greater, I'd do a regular cake then a smaller intolerance-free cake or cupcakes for you & DS. My diary free cupcakes were just made with almond milk & non-dairy butter so I made them all that way & no one even noticed.

It depends on the crowd you are going to have- a lot of kids, and I don't know if your menu would go over wonderfully to a bunch of 10-year-olds. A small crowd of clean-eating adults? Fantastic. My FIL, bless his heart, would probably ask where the real meal is.
