vegetarian/vegan moms on this board?

I was wondering if there are other vegetarian/vegan moms on this board?  I would love to hear any resources you have used or will use to make sure baby stays healthy.  I am fine with keeping myself fueled with the correct nutrients; I just want to make sure I am keeping on top of it during pregnancy.

Re: vegetarian/vegan moms on this board?

  • I've been vegetarian since 2000.  This is my second pregnancy, and I didn't change much.  I also had hyperemesis, so I was focusing on getting anything down.  I do have the vegetarian mother's cookbook (gift from MIL) and it has some good things with it.  But mostly, if you have been veggie for awhile and feel like you have a good handle on it, I wouldn't worry too much.  Maybe focus a bit more on protein.  I ate a lot of yogurt, hummus, cheese sticks, nuts, etc.  I found it easier to focus on protein for my snacks than to try to change my meal habits drastically.

  • I've been vegetarian for 16 years. When pregnant with DD I ate pretty normally lots of almonds, whole wheat English muffins with pb, fruit, veggies, beans whenever I could stomach them. I drink a lot of milk and eat cheese too. After a while my morning sickness was so bad I just ate whatever I could keep down. Keep up with your prenatals and you should be fine.

  • I'm a vegetarian too. I try to eat fruit and veggies. I also drink the special k protein shakes for the extra protein. Also it helps with the dizziness I have been having.
  • I'm a vegetarian and have been almost my entire life. My doc said that protein [about 60 to 75 a day] and iron were two big things i need to watch for. I am mixing Jay Robb protein stuff with milk each morning to ensure I get enough protein. My prenatal has all the iron I need.

I will also say my doc put me on a prenatal with fish oil, which I was initially really opposed to. She explained the importance of it and why I need that specific prenatal with my MTHFR diagnosis, so I am taking it now for the baby.
